@retoor yeah it’s gotten to the point where a lot of people don’t really need a full blown computer I mean look at the proliferation of android. One could argue thought that its not a pure Linux distribution and more a derivative.
-
@retoor it’s crazy when you see how smooth Linux derivatives work on minimal hardware.
-
@retoor yeah the chrome book could come back but I feel like Google may have approached the concept the wrong way.
In all honesty they may have been better off building their own open source Linux distribution customized with Google apps running as if they were native and build out a framework for developers to use.
The issue then would be something else Linus spoke of. The fact that to win Linux would have to support the random keyboard from China and the odd printer from Japan. That it would be great for the big ticket items but might feel apart when it comes to niche devices and use cases. -
@Demolishun I can understand the issues users would face running a Linux distribution customized to their liking. Before moving to MacOS i was a die hard Linux user too. What I’d like to see is a Linux distribution for mass deployment in fields that need a stable OS that doesn’t shit itself when you least expect it.
-
@retoor Awesome!! When I see stuff like this and hear people saying they have 12 year old computers running Linux like it’s brand new I have to wonder why we are using stable Linux distributions for mass deployment. For example, in pharmacies and medical centers where users would be running mostly web applications and storing docs on a shared drive.
-
@retoor it’s really does make no sense. It basically has to have super computer level components for it to run smoothly and then it’s only for a time. Conversely put a Linux distribution on a computer with 16GB of ram, a SSD, and a relatively good processor and you’ll be set for 10 years
-
@donkulator nah it’s total fuckry for mass deployment you might be better off using Linux at this point in the game.
-
Wait devrant has alternatives…..interesting
-
@jestdotty couple that with subpar optimization and you see why the average laptop is a toaster oven.
-
@Demolishun this sounds like a hardware needing a bit of maintenance issue and program inefficiency issue. The hardware is capable but the programs and OS’s aren’t optimized enough. 🤔
-
@Demolishun I do the same along with whipping down my Mac with a microfiber cloth from time to time so the finger print oils don’t set in. My issue isn’t the maintenance but the specs and given performance
-
@netikras it’s an E15 that’s why I give it some grace when it’s acting up.
-
@Demolishun this isn’t the reality we should be living in.
-
@Tounai Yeah some parts of the interface took some getting use to. Coming from Fedora running GNOME I found some things better implemented there surprisingly. Interns of performance mine runs an M2, so it’s like butter most times.
-
@Demolishun wish I could read through the thread, sounds really interesting
-
@xcodesucks Web and mobile development mostly. Building API’s and the like
-
@Demolishun ohhhh… I forgot vim works based of key bindings. 😆 that whole situation is so funny yet ironic
-
@Demolishun so they couldn’t just close the window 🤨
-
@netikras yup.. didn’t think it would be this smooth of an experience but I’m happy to say I was wrong
-
@SuspiciousBug it’s not just you. I’ve asked it to write me an essay with references and links it provided to said references didn’t work or lead to empty pages. Asked it to write me some kotlin code to connect to a database and that was only half right. It’s great at python tho.

@iceb so true 😭
-
@iceb and that’s what I hate the most. They get the backing of some executives and boom they are the head of a department or team.
-
@Oktokolo I see but Second Life grew organically and wasn’t being forced. Also many promises were made in regards to Zuck and his Metaverse and in the eyes of shareholders maybe hardly any of those were realized
-
@Oktokolo what Zuck is also missing is organic growth. He wants this to grow and be molded in his image.
This would involve people accepting his ideas on how things in the meta verse might work. And people just aren’t willing to do that. -
@Lensflare don’t wait. Start building it now!
-
@clamore wow this is worse than I thought. Do your best then get out a there.
-
There’s a lot of smart people in our field that learned how to code a while back and just called it a day. They are comfy in their jobs, they built some processes for the company and they may be the only ones who really know how said processes work and finally they are master bullshiters that have maneuvered their way into a position and the higher ups value them to some degree.
For them learning anything new isn’t really necessary and if you introduce anything new to them they may play it off as nothing important. I work with a few of them so I know where you’re coming from. -
@Oktokolo yeah I see how great it is for those who can’t draw or paints. And while I do see is getting better, in its current state some of the results can come off as a bit lifeless, like there’s something missing. I’ve been an admirer of art for a while now so I guess that’s my own biases showing.
-
@Oktokolo yeah they don’t I that’s ok I guess. That said Ai art is arguably pretty bad tho. But I’m all for Ai building me a front end.
-
@red-knot you do that
