Along the same lines, but in a story to make it more confusing:

3 friends go to a motel and ask for rooms, but there is only one room available for $30/night. The friends split the cost, so each pays $10. The next morning, the manager comes in and realizes they were overcharged as they were running a special and the room was only $25. He sent the front desk clerk to refund them $5. The clerk decided to give them each a dollar back and keep $2 for himself. So after each receiving a dollar back, they each paid only $9.

$9 x 3 == $27 (what each friend paid) + $2 (what the clerk took) == $29. Where did the extra dollar go?

And it gives Microsoft access to a ton of developers to whom it wants to push its own tools/ecosphere (which it is already doing very successfully).

Not to mention, it’s quite possible they (and their developers) were already spending quite a bit of money on repos annually themselves.

@AmyShackles yeah, for sure. @pandasama if you’re talking Silicon Valley where a lot of this high pay is, expect to pay ~$2,500/month for a small studio/1BR apartment unless you want a long commute.

Last year I discovered that a job posting for my team said that experience with Lotus Notes and Perl was required. We haven’t used either on our team in over a decade....

Needless to say, I fixed it.

While I agree with most of your points, there are problems on both sides of the fence here: namely that software developers tend to be poor at estimating how long tasks will take. This prompted notable developer Joel Spolsky to develop a system to provide better estimates: https://joelonsoftware.com/2007/10/...

With that said, poor management tends to set impossible timelines or even ask for impossible tasks, and rarely create clear requirements and gain an adequate understanding of the existing challenges (technical debt / legacy code, scheduling conflicts with key stakeholders, etc.).

But another big issue is sales people. I’ve seen software developers held accountable for missing deadlines. I’ve never seen a sales person held accountable for selling smoke or magic.
