Windows.

Install Oracle VM for ubuntu.
You should have 8/16 GB RAM, if you use VM.
Why Windows?
* MS Office
* Proper Alt+Tab to switch windows when multi tasking.
* Flexible task bar
* Proper media player
* Many screen share softwares won't work properly with Ubuntu, for eg, webex. IMs like Skype.

Why Ubuntu VM?
* development environment with terminal and supported packages if you code c, c++, java, python, etc
* u can learn shell script which is very powerful in simplifying daily tasks.

Point is, a VM is enough when you want to experiment, research and learn a command based OS which doesn't utilize much graphics card.
VM'ing a full graphics card utilizing, GUI based OS is headache.

@h3ll if you can access internet before connecting vpn, note the gateway. Then add this as a default gw after connecting to vpn, to access internet.
