@davide
Thanks ๐
Why? I belive that I would like Linux, but isn't Windows supporting more developer apps? -
davide24248y@SimonNielsen I think not. Linux is more open and if you want Windows you can always install a VM
-
drRoss48808y@davide Fuck this "Linux is moreโopen" bollocks. It's only more open if you know what you're doing. Otherwise it's just the same as any other. If you just want to get on with some fucking work, just install Windows for fucking fuck sake and be done with it.
-
Linusero6058y@drRoss It is more open, with Linux you have many flavours, so you can have a rolling rease so you update the kernel when you update (arch), or not (like Debian). You can adapt it to your computer, if it is not so good you can use a lighter windows manager, etc.
*Also, and the most important thing, it updates when YOU want. You have the control of your PC not a company -
davide24248y@drRoss Are you a developer? Then use Linux! It's free and open and you can improve your knoweledge
-
@Linusero
Thanks for the answer.
I have a lot fellow students, which Windows computers started updating in the middle of an exam.
My Mac have never done such a evil thing ๐ -
penguin20098yDefinitely Linux for development. It's more open and a great skill to add to have under you belt. Not to mention all the other benefits of stability and the like.
-
Install both and see for yourself. Leave the cool kids fight and decide for youself
-
Go for Linux, I'd mainly argue that it works the way a programmer expects a computer to work, it seems more logical in a certain way. Oh and Windows lovers don't go violent on me and call me a windows ignorant, I've been using Linux only for a year now, and have known each Windows versions before.
-
I prefer Mac os to you of course with parallels desktop
To have Linux and Windows with Good performance
And ingrated ui, of course it's mac gentlemen
3 in 1 must be delicious ๐ ; -
Linux:
Java IDEs run in any mayor operating systems of course Linux include.
Most of the Web Server infrastructure run Linux in production in many companies.
Windows:
You want to learn other languages that use Windows tech stack like C# and maybe .NET (I recommend Visual Studio that only runs in Windows).
Mac:
You have money. Virtualbox or parallels to have Linux and Windows. -
Gahan10908yWhy install windows:
-to play games
-to speak "fuck you" in each moment
-utilizing graphics card to work on 3d models or game development
Why install linux
-to increase knowledge
-…lear new things daily
-all tweaks under control
-verbose mode
-it gives you actual reason if any problem occurs...(windows just run diagnosing tool which do nothing) -
Windows.
Install Oracle VM for ubuntu.
You should have 8/16 GB RAM, if you use VM.
Why Windows?
* MS Office
* Proper Alt+Tab to switch windows when multi tasking.
* Flexible task bar
* Proper media player
* Many screen share softwares won't work properly with Ubuntu, for eg, webex. IMs like Skype.
Why Ubuntu VM?
* development environment with terminal and supported packages if you code c, c++, java, python, etc
* u can learn shell script which is very powerful in simplifying daily tasks.
Point is, a VM is enough when you want to experiment, research and learn a command based OS which doesn't utilize much graphics card.
VM'ing a full graphics card utilizing, GUI based OS is headache. -
If you are going to use a laptop go for Windows or mac, linux is "open" but sucks in battery life.
Go for Linux, if you want to optimize your linux for your hardware to get the best battery life. -
@mohammed I think that's an issue that was existant in older versions only. My laptop pulls out quite the same use time as with Windows, being 6~8hrs with a 6th gen Intel and DDR3L
-
gnaaah9838y@SimonNielsen First of all, why do you feel like switching?
macOS already is a Unix system (BSD) and thereforeโ runs all the dev tools you need and is more hassle free than Linux.
On Windows you have a bad terminal an half the dev tools are some weird windows adoptions because they mainly support native Linux like python, node, ... -
penguin20098y@mohammed Not true. I get 8+ hours of battery life running ubuntu on my laptop. With windows about ca. 7

- Msoffice, sure if you have to for business reasons. Else google docs or libreoffice works great.
- Linux can alt+tab too of course
- Linux task bar can do whatever you want. So in terms of flexibility is vastly superior to everything else.
- Media players - there's tons of really good ones. vlc is what i use.
- screen share software (hangouts and skype is what i've used) work great on linux. -
Well... I use windows on my laptop... But the reasons for me are:
1. It is a gaming laptop (not all hardware works properly on linux)
2. I m a C++ programmer and use visual c++ (best thing ever for me to code in c++)
3. Linux is awesome yes, but I usually just wanna get the work done and windows allows me to do just that.
4. In linux I can't keep the system hibernated (problems with kernel apparently) and sound breaks way too often (bluetooth and stuff)
5. Cant find games on linux which I can enjoy (MMOs)
Hence, Windows wins for me. -
You really think that ๐ that Linux users just use for showing off๐ค I am really way more productive when I use my mint kde ! I only can get shit done in my Linux. @azuredivay
-
I can tweak everything you listed there in any Linux in 20 minutes ! If you really give a damn about productivity do use Linux!
-
penguin20098y@Thewebdev Yep. I have a linux dual boot, which I use solely for a couple games. Linux is much more efficient for work when you get past the initial learning curve.
-
@azuredivay Or Linux if you want a working machine that is really yours. Using Linux isn't about showing of mostly although you do have those asshats.
Anyways, I can highly recommend Mint! -
Totally agree. Just learn the basic and basic commands and just learn to do efficient google search so when any eroor comes you don't go bitch about everywhere which can solve by some simple copy paste or some little tweaks ! I only use Windows for games and it does the job so for me it's only good for it @penguin
