@bioDan he told us to think of it as a NxN matrix instead of an array of arrays. I'm not really sure why or what the difference would be when the representation in code would be an array of arrays or an array of NxN length. He wants everything in pseudocode and modifying full rows/columns at a time isn't allowed, single elements only.
I did have the solution where I wrote full rows at a time, but he wanted us to treat writing N elements as taking O(N) time, yielding overall O(N^2). I basically just gave up and wrote that the problem is bullshit without writing up to N elements concurrently -
@Root I mean it's almost completely broken and relies on other things that were developed past it and other other things that are also old, abandoned, and broken that I don't have access to so I'm just a big ball of confusion. It probably won't be bad once I start REALLY digging into it but for now, it's super frustrating to figure out
-
To clarify: it's not LEGACY legacy, it's just kinda there at this point. The team just kinda abandoned it for a little while then moved quickly and it's just kind of in this state of do we use it or not use it. But everything's fucked nonetheless
-
@SPie that's definitely the type of environment I'm in now. Everyone helps everyone else regardless of status
-
@TobyAsE Thanks, I'll definitely look into it!
-
So when you finish a complex line of code, do you give your wall a celebratory punch?
-
@b3b3 I'll look into it!
-
@master98ofu that's kind of what I want to do with the external hard drive; make a hackintosh. I just don't want to have to spend money on building an entirely new system if I can get it to run on the system I already have (which has compatible hardware)

My English teacher wanted to kill me for this;
-
@sambid I'm afraid I'm not quite sure what you're talking about, sorry
-
@stimulate My school wanted it to be broad in scope so it's about as broad as possible; any genre could be made. Seeing as it was only a high school level project, I settled for 2D so I wouldn't drive myself absolutely crazy with the little time I had to work with. And the administration only knows that Java is the highest level course that my school offers so they had me do it in Java which was pretty disgusting. For further detail, I used LWJGL for just about everything. The engine itself basically just gets the user up and running. The users have to do things like AI themselves, but I did include inventory management for them because I got bored over a weekend.
-
@SirUneke Well, it's a game engine so there really isn't a kind of game for it. It's extremely broad in the types of games it can be used to make
-
@DeveloperACE because my school's administration has no clue about how anything works... ever
-
I actually use my javascript book for the same purpose. glad to know I'm not alone
-
I'm so lucky that my school projects aren't crappy any more. Game engine using OpenGL and automating things in my school with Raspberry Pi is my next school year. Oh, and robots as well
-
My best guess is 2^31-1
-
@ArturS He doesn't care about the test really, he wants to see how easily other people can use it
-
I've never had that issue with DevRant, but that actually happens a lot with a variety of different apps on my phone.

My dad once got the same ransomware that my brother had gotten a month prior. He took my brother's PC to one of his friends who specializes in this kind of stuff. He got charged quite a bit of money and lost all of my brother's files. It took all weekend. So my dad has this ransomware and doesn't want to go to the same guy because he didn't want to lose his files. I found a flaw with the ransomware and was able to get to the control panel to do a system restore from a point just a week before he got the virus. I saved him money and saved his files. And it only took about an hour.
Reasons programmers are good at this stuff: we know how to break programs just as well as we know how to write them. -
@liammartens AP is Advanced Placement. They're tests that can be taken in high schools and some colleges will exempt you from taking entry level classes if you score high enough on these exams
-
It gets worse when people only tell you to just use another language or another library or something like that because they don't know the solution either.
-
@xroad Thank you for your input. However she can't officially say that I wrote an entire course due to weird school rules that prohibit changes to a curriculum without administrative approval. So whenever people talk about it it's just "supplemental material." No matter what I do I just get screwed over one way or another.
-
@xroad It is an opportunity, however I have a senior project to do as well and I decided to go big with that. I have to program a game engine before December. So writing a Java curriculum is going to eat up a whole bunch of time that I could be using on the engine. Especially because she wants me to make videos to go along with the papers.
-
I switch between the Skyrim soundtrack, a melodic dubstep mix, and Audiomachine.

Took the AP Computer Science exam last month. 90 minutes to write code in pencil for 4 prompts each with multiple sections. Had to be done in Java. Had to stay within the AP Java subset (ridiculously small) or outside of it within reason. The questions weren't hard, but writing idiot-proof code with pencil is time consuming
-
@tomwolters I can try my best. He's a pretty smart guy so hopefully he will make some sense of what I'm saying
-
I personally haven't had that happen yet. But in my programming classes it's fun to watch the newbies (we have all levels in one room) get stuff like that and start freaking out. Then my teacher yells at me to go help them and then it isn't as fun.
-
Well I'm glad that I'm not the only one who does that.
-
@azous No, not that. I've tried a bunch of different variable names. It turns out that instead of using (screenSizeX, screenSizeY) in my function I typed (screenSizeX, screenSizeX) on accident. You can imagine how mad I was when I found that just moments ago. *facepalm at my own stupidity*
-
Usually I'll listen to a mixture of Audiomachine and Two Steps From Hell
