Oh man.
I downloaded this app to see if anyone else is noticing a funny pattern with azure and spot nodes when there are power outages in North America, and dang. Y'all kinda toxic. What is this, the dark ages?
Anyways, if someone asks you to use a neutral pronoun for them, believe them.
They probably do gender deviant stuff outside of the workplace, but do their best to tone things down in a professional setting. It would be super inappropriate for them to "show you" why they is the right form of address. Just let it go and let them have a personal life.
Lack of punctuation, though? Oof, no thanks. Way too much room for ambiguity. -
Oh hey. astro needs some help with spectroscopy stuff. Cool payout including knowing the size of the visible universe more closely if you're keen for a new project. Likely similar to your previous work.
It's less automating grunt work and more analysis stuff, though. -
All a nondiscrimination policy does in a code of conduct is let an organization publicly enforce things that they're likely already doing, but in public instead of via secret blacklists and whispered warnings.
If the org wasn't using a standard process before, this will make things more consistent. I assure you, they were enforcing parts of this for a while, it just wasn't formalized.
That said, I'm not super read up on the exact implementation here, but I haven't seen anything objectionable in the reading I have done. If you've got some subsection you'd like to suggest, I'm all ears.
I'm seeing a lot of people getting bent out of shape-- if senior folks are really, genuinely harassing others, why are you protecting them? Both technical and ethical merit matters. If someone, for example, doxes someone online when they get mad, do you really want them being trusted with your personal data? I sure wouldn't. -
@Condor tyty!
-
"How can someone have great technical prowess but treat other people terribly?"
Super fucking easily, dude.
This industry needs soft skills but doesn't reward them. We take them for granted when we shouldn't and it creates kind of a toxic situation where team members that do have them are disproportionately called on to pick up the slack for others without any additional benefit to themselves. -
Overtraining IS a thing...

Sounds like your own solution is right there, buddy. Go cry. If you need to, watch a sad movie or chop some onions first.
-
Go see a doctor and use milk to cut the acidity in your coffee?

It's comfy! If you're just programming in it, I wouldn't bother (or use programmer's Dvorak), but I used it on my English papers in high school.
No idea if it's better, but it's comfy to use. -
@Christine constantly making drug references definitely counts as 'unprofessional'. Voice your concerns to HR before he's hired and establish a paper trail. Just mention that he's been very unprofessional in the past.
Professionals don't make each other uncomfortable. They have other options, let them know this one might have some hidden issues. -
Let HR know if they've done anything really inconsiderate or if you've struggled to work together in the past. Others will likely have trouble too.

@wokeRoach Minnesota. I went to school near north Dakota, though. I remember the day the astronomy department threw a party because it was colder than Mars.
-
That sounds so nice right now. We had - 10f (-23 c) yesterday, which wasn't too bad, especially for this time of year.
For a while, we weren't really getting actual winters. This one seems to be a nice return to normalcy. :) -
Maybe they botched their wide character support?
-
Some professionals are illiterate. It sounds like he might be one of them, at least to some degree.
Worst part is, if you call him on it, you're toast. Sounds like you need either a new boss or he needs a secretary. I don't envy you. -
That's... Not right. Google must have pulled the wrong number from the page.
-
Reinstall python 2.7, it was probably using it.
-
@succ they provide python notebooks that do. If you need to access system.io, not sure it'll do the trick, but otherwise, you get my favorite python dev environment.

Five bucks says that all earned those names at karaoke night.

What does your header mean? It's not not rant, but it says to expect a not at the end, but then there's a bitwise or rant? It doesn't seem to make sense. Very confused.
-
Jupilyter or continuum analytics should host online python notebooks you can run (slowly) from your phone.
-
@dfox?
-
@NoMad yeah. The rest of the development team doesn't seem to mind, but I think they're afraid of looking dumb, so they don't say anything.
-
@NoMad I did at first. Now, it's just the hella long functions that bug me.
If.👏 It's. 👏Over. 👏100.👏 Lines. 👏Pull.👏 Something. 👏Out. 👏 -
Just because someone will do it for less shouldn't have bearing on you. They may be in another region where that's neigh on livable due to exchange rates. They likely aren't that good at at least some parts of the job (communication, for example).
Charge what you want to charge for your skills, there's no need to hate on them for charging less. -
🎶Every time I code, I get this feeling, 🎶
🎶And every time I push, I swear I could fly. 🎶
🎶Everytime my heart beats fast, 🎶
🎶I want this to last! 🎶
🎶I need this in my life! 🎶
Hmm, maybe it's not quite that intense... (To the tune of Everytime We Touch by Cascada) -
Generally by committing the code myself, I trust that in most cases, seeing my name on the blame will suffice.
It I know that the feature might get moved around, or a blame record wouldn't be enough (usually if I'm explaining stakeholder decisions) I add my initials and the date after the bulk of my comment.
As I generally work on projects with many other developers, adding my name to a comment at the top of a 10k line file just wouldn't be that helpful to anyone. -
@elQueFaltaba oh, for sure, it's a possibility. I was just mentioning that it's possible that it was done OK, too. Like I said, I'm sure the sales pitch was good, but we don't know what system the hospital actually bought.

If you're truly lost, consider contributing to open source stuff or asking your family if they want any thing mobile apps (like a dice roller or a kitchen timer).
-
I do other stuff and try to figure out why I'm so obsessed with professional development. If you're putting knowledge of a tool above something you want to try, I think you should take a good long look at yourself.
There's plenty of neat programming puzzles (project euler comes to mind) if you're into working for practice's sake, but I wouldn't recommend it, too be honest. There's more to holiday breaks than computers.
