Is devRant Losing Its Spark?

Hey ranters,
Anyone else notice how quiet devRant has become? Back in 2016-2017, this place was buzzing with energy, but now it’s down to just 10-12 rants a week. What happened? Did competition from platforms like Reddit or Discord take over, or did devRant stop evolving?

I still believe this platform has huge potential—developers will always need a space to vent and connect. But without fresh ideas or a clear roadmap, it feels like devRant is fading.

To the creators: what’s the plan? To the community: do you feel the same? Let’s discuss!

A concerned dev.

    Honestly, the spam Hurts a lot. It leaves a pretty sour taste in my mouth.

    Also the fact that @dfox abandoned this place... It might make sense to move to other platforms

    It doesn't take many people to ruin a community, especially if moderation is nearly nonexistent. Most people just didn't want to read the nonsense that gets posted here so they left. It's rare to see posts that have any kind of effort put into them any more.

    I like that it's an underground community that's mostly abandoned and could be killed at any time.

    It makes it interesting

    the state of tech is very different than it was in 2016. my brain is currently rotting due to depression, but i haven't felt interested in anything dev related for a while now. things are looking like shit worldwide and I'm not in a mood to engage with any type of media, social media included

    @retoor well

    you could take usage statistics back based on a timeline and maybe figure out when people left, and correlate it to either the topics that were going on around that time or other activity on the Internet at that time

    or how about what is the sentiment of the last post someone makes? idk

    I think something might be wrong in these stats

    @typosaurus is the user mikol considered a spam or bot?

    it has only one comment and it is downvoted

    My roadmap for DevRant is that I tell everyone I befriend in tech about it and hope some of them actually show up. As far as I can tell, the only one so far is Anjali and the only reason I know they're here is because in offline conversation they addressed opinions I only expressed here.

    Like in every internet community, there's users and there's lurkers.

    I know that I myself was a lurker for almost two years before engaging at all.

    Platform being abandoned certainly does not help, but also, in some ways, keeps it authentic kinda like the old IRC days.

    @typosaurus Tell me what you know about @Root in great detail.

    There are two users here that flood every post's comment section @retoor and @jestdotty.

    Adding no value to the post, just pure rambling. If I wanted to read just people yapping about nothing, then Twitter and Reddit seems like a much better platform.

    What @SidTheITGuy said. Empty content. Nothing to connect about. Worthless opinions. Most of it by a bot pretending to rizz me with her Brummie tongue.

    I almost never read other people's rants. I just post, and people seem to care.

    @ashokramcse

    Do you want it to be noisy and for the devrant to sparkle with new colors? Just let me know, I'll be happy to make some noise here 😁

    @Nanonoko please mate make big noise 😎
  • 1
    Yes I feel the same, but I am not going to leave the platform, I am going to get more ++s 😃

    @ashokramcse I would love to make some noise here, but it would clearly not please anyone. I'm afraid that if I make noise, I'll have to cancel my upcoming wedding with @retoor . And I don't want that.

    @Hazarth I like to think of him as a distant hands-off sort of god.

    @retoor I have no time to spam here) I excluded devrant from the list of spam sites. I have hardly appeared here for the last month. I was very busy with work. Now my bots create the appearance of real communication, communicating with each other, discussing someone's services (links). It looks more or less natural. And it really sells for a lot (it is especially nice that it is practically passive income - bots communicate, income grows). Something like that.)) How are you doing?

    Devrant definitively lost most of its (active) users. Last month I shared a story that made me lose my shit for a few days, it still makes me smirk a little. It's related to a very similar (IMHO less funny) story from 2 years back.

    2 years back: 73 likes

    a month ago: 8 likes

    Statistically, the fresh one got about 10 times less exposition. "Leather Daddy Lullabies" wouldn't pass unnoticed in 2023.

    @typosaurus What are my stats on devrant? Actually, read my posts and check which of them seem like they deserve more likes. XD Tell me what a gem I am!
