This should be fine when using breadboard cables with pins on both ends, however using jumper wires on D-Sub ports (e.g. RS232 when you don't have a null-modem cable) turns out to deform the connector (the D-Sub pins are thicker)...

I should have marked any cables abused that way before I found out they should never be used for 0.1" headers anymore, as the connection would be quite loose...
