In 2008 I took my first web development job for an agency that's no longer around. There was a Vice President there by appointment from our coke headed owner who really liked to micromanage and invade privacy with key loggers and screencap spyware to "manage" us. I found out because my machine would snag when moving the mouse cursor and sometimes I'd accidentally paste the screenshot into photoshop just before the software cleared the clipboard. Anyway, I wasn't supposed to know I was being monitored so I just unplugged my network cable and killed the service running the jank ass spyware. I'd delete it when no one was looking and wipe out the cache of screencaps it would compile every day. It was basically a troll vs troll stalemate for weeks. Finally they gave in and told everyone what was going on so we collectively decided to seek revenge. We bought a piezo buzzer about the size of a quarter that chirped like crickets at random intervals. We stuck it on the underside of his desk inside of the middle drawer area and let it go. They spent so much time and money trying to get rid of the cricket infestation. We let it go on for weeks. I ended up quitting before the gag was up, but damn was it funny to see him squirm in that office because of those crickets!6

On a different note, _Deus Ex_ is by far my favourite video game. However, OpenBSD, which is my favourite operating system, does not support playing _Deus Ex_; as such, I was forced to improvise.
I own a few servers which run Ubuntu Linux, which can run VirtualBox, which can run Microsoft Windows XP, which can play _Deus Ex_. As such, I relocated my copy of Windows XP and spun up a new virtual machine, installing the operating system and the video game. After some minor hiccups, _Deus Ex_ was played without any difficulties, aside from the lack of audio, which resulted from having used VNC to access the virtual machine.
This set-up is janky, for I access the game by connecting via VNC to an Ubuntu installation which runs a virtual installation of Microsoft Windows... which runs _Deus Ex_ in windowed mode; however, I find that using this janky set-up is preferable to not being able to play _Deus Ex_.
On an even _more_ different note, future rants may be written in the third person; possibly as a result of having written briefings and whatnot in the third person for nearly two (2) decades and disliking pronouns, I dislike writing in the first person. I shall still be the author of the rants which are posted to this account.

I finally got my github up.
You all can look at my terrible code, which is just glorified snippets. I don't mind.
Left out probably 98% of all the code larger than 10 lines because of jank, throwaways, and how poorly I documented it. Basically throwing shit on a wall.
I also left of the "maaaaaaths!" code because its already super convoluted and strictly a one-man thing. Likewise the web scrapers (barely documented and custom per site), and ML scripts.

did you make good architecture decisions or did you just jank and roll with it? how did the software evolve over time? how was onboarding new devs to work on the software? what sorts of issues were there? did the company make it? what were external factors that made making it difficult?3 -

... and actually makes a good case for interfaces / traits. generally in languages I just used generics to get around limitations of having to type a lot / duplicate code, and I'd remove interfaces because they're annoying to have to deal with, but I can see this be useful for once now.
like you can start a prototype app with files as a database then move to a small database type then later a more monolithic big data one and all that would be through one trait the whole time. so you could anticipate natural progressions of an app, instead of having to build the last version you can put jank behind interfaces and then switch things in and out to test new technologies which does actually give me a lot of relief for my newfound anxiety of me rewriting my rust codebases because I get some small things wrong. I've been coding in circles due to it and I have several saved files that are out of date now but I don't want to delete and they make the compiler mad cuz I had no interface boundaries as such and now stuff has changed somewhere else in the app and by God pls argh
this also means you can code "top-down". in carl Jung typology that's Te and most programmers are Ti-types so they do the little details and then sort of glue everything together (?) but not everybody thinks this way. by this point I just hate rust for being inconsistent
made a cargo command with clap
it works if you run it directly but if you install it with cargo globally then evidently it's for no reason sending in an extra argument into the program which messes everything up
of course clap has no documentation about this so I jank my way to just work around the issue by parsing the arguments before I give them to clap
and on cargo -- list my command doesn't have a description even though the thing I copied has a working description in that listing, and my cargo file has a description, and clap is happily inferring my description from said cargo file
chatGPT thinks I just need the description field filled in the cargo file and it'll work. well it doesn't.

I just started a new job last week. Old-school sysadmin role for a pretty old-school company, but the pay is nice and the kids've gotta eat.
They gave me a windows laptop. I haven't used windows for work or as a daily driver since 2016, and now, a week into trying to make this machine work for me, I have the following observations to report.
WSL is nice. It's nice to have it installed(though actually installing it was an adventure unto itself), and to set alacritty to open my default user prompt straight into that is very nice. As terminal emulators are by far my most used piece of software, that's nice to have.
Command-line software management through powershell, winget, and chocolatey are also very nice.
I like the accessibility offered by autohotkey, though there is something of a learning curve on it. Once I get better with it, I suspect that what follows will be largely mitigated.
The Bad:
In general, Windows is janky. It feels like it's all kinda taped together without any particular cohesion in mind. As a desktop, it feels decidedly amateur, compared to the feature-mountain polish of MacOS, and especially compared to the flexibility and infinite possibilities of Linux.
Lots of screen real estate is wasted, with window decorations, and fonts that look terrible at smaller sizes, because the antialiasing of fonts is just terrible. Almost all the features I depend on in other desktops: ad-hoc searches and launches(alfred, rofi) are-- again --janky. They work, but they typically require more typing than alfred or rofi. I admit I haven't spent weeks on this problem yet, but I haven't found a workable solution yet with wox, hain, and keypirinha. Quick searches like what you get with alfred, alfred workflows, and the swiss army knife that is rofi, just aren't possible or reliable with the tools I've used so far, and most require some kind of indexing agent to fully function.
It beggars imagination that a desktop in which users are subjected to "default apps" that is purported to be acceptable for enterprise, professional use, does not have a default entry for text editor. I installed nvim-qt, and I want to use it to edit anything and everything I ever edit with text, but all too often, apps have hard-coded instructions to open text files with notepad.
I want to open certain URLs with firefox, certain ones with firefox developer edition, and others with vivaldi, and yet there is not an app available that I have seen yet in my searches that allows me to set this kind of configuration. I found one that's supposed to, but it just ignores everything I put into its config, and just opens MS Edge for everything. Jank.
Simple things take too long. Like the delay between when I laboriously hit ctrl-alt-del to bring up the login and when the actual text field appears, and the delay between that and when I want to start using the computer.
Changing some settings requires a reboot. Updating some software requires a reboot. Updating permissions on something sometimes requires a reboot. And those are all on top of the frequent requests to reboot for updates.
I would have thought Windows would have overcome most of the issues that create these problems, but it's just, as I said, amateur.1 -
I was always into computers, ever since I was a kid. Played a lot of videogames on Windows 98 and XP, and a lot of my earliest drawings were level ideas for those games. My first encounters with code were with game creation software like GameMaker, but I barely touched the code proper outside of editing a few variables from other people's code. After that I basically forgot all about it and spent most of my teen years being a shutin.
Skip ahead to my last year of high school without much idea on what to do. I was good at math when I wasn't being a lazy shit, so between that and what my parents expected of me, I was prepared to go to university for civil engineering. However, two things changed that decision, the first being a great IT professor, when me and a friend were so far ahead, he started assigning us some harder work, and suggested we study computer science at university. The second was a super jank and obscure open-source early 2000's game that somehow still has a thriving community and is actively being developed. I stumbled upon it by chance, and after playing for a while, I submitted a balance change on the GitHub repo. Even though it was just a single variable change, that time I got it. That time I saw how powerful programming could be and what could be done with it. I submitted PR after PR of new features, changes and bugfixes, by the time I left there I had a somewhat solid grasp of the fundamentals of programming, and decided to enrol in the computer science degree.
Enrolling was possibly the best decision I ever made (not america; debt isn't an issue), as well as giving me actual social skills, every course I took just clicked. The knowledge I already somewhat intuitively had a vague grasp on from videogames, general computer use and collaborating with russian coders who produced the jankiest shit that was still somehow functional was expanded upon and consolidated with a high-quality formal education. Four years later and I'm fresh out of uni, it was a long road between when the seed was first planted in my mind and now, but I've finally found out what I want to do with my life.

It seems like very version of Ubuntu I use at work has jank. Ubuntu 18.04 would have file managers that just die. After locking/unlocking the screen it would move windows between monitors. One window would seemingly cause other windows to have discoloration and I would see phantom objects text overlaid with what looks like transparency. This was all Gnome. Lots of little quirks that I just got used to.
Now I am running 22.04 and while a lot of jank went away I am getting new jank. Every once in a while if I move a window or bring a window up after hiding the window. The window will oversize across the screen like I zoomed in. Noticing this with Firefox. It goes back to normal size real quick. But it is kind of wild. Jank that stayed is my external monitor I have attached through hdmi takes its sweet time to reactivate after being asleep. This might actually be a weird hardware issue. This is also Gnome.
I just find it wild that this jank is there and we are like: "Oh well. At least it ain't MS Windows jank..."6 -

How is building Typescript libraries for esm, cjs and dts with Rollup still breaking in 2023? I had a setup last year that worked perfectly fine, I copied it over to a new library and now tslib is being imported by relative path from node_modules? Why would that ever work?5

found an old config file on my external drive for all my torrent files. awyisss. my SSD died out of nowhere last year and I thought I lost all my torrent configs! I had hundreds of TV series and stuff and I kept track which ones I watched and didn't in the client. so when the SSD died I lost all my knowledge of my progress. but I found this config file just now and imported it. omg booyah. I think I got one show since this backup. godsend
decided to export settings again and it said I can set it on a schedule. go to the scheduler tab in the settings and I have no clue what's going on. nothing about exporting settings, it just has schedule configurations that seem to conflict. then I realized. the main client maybe has a schedule tab icon. bam am right. so in settings I turn on scheduler and then the main app gives me access to the scheduler tab and if I go there I can click "add" and then I can schedule regular config backups
bruh this UI is so jank. but it actually is impressive. because. while I have experience in designing websites, when I played around with making a GUI in rust, which would be native, I have absolutely no clue how to make an app on this tech. now I'm looking at this complex torrent client with its bazillion features in absolute awe.

For fucks sake, why can't Microsoft switch to Lua or JS as an embedded language instead of VBA.
It bad enough working with their office-jank but having program in this butt-rape of a language takes the cake.7
