The "just use the right tool for the job" argument I've seen many times in defense of Windows is getting tiresome. When the tool's handle is on fire, you use a different tool. It's madness to keep burning yourself.

    Get me AAA games with full support on *nix and I'll swap.
    Till then, I'll keep playing with Fire.

    Just because it's said a lot doesn't make it any less true though.

    The fact we're still going back and forth over OS preference is pretty retarded though. Like genuinely people need to stop giving a fuck. It's lame.

    @Stuxnet fuck you mate, my OS is better then yours.

    😂

    It's awesome how old this flame war is, but not all devs are 100% devs 100% of the time, windows let's me do what I want, when I want.. granted it's not on fire, and spin up any OS environment I want when I need it - that was the whole point of VM's and docker.

    @C0D4

    I haven't really had any interest in AAA games since years before the studios all transformed entirely into pieces of shit, but that said, all that really doesn't work is anti-cheat stuff, like BattleEye with PUBG. For extreme cases like that, I have a windows machine behind the TV in the living room that I can stream from with parsec. But 99.9-repeating percent of the time, all games just work on linux.

    @bahua but that's the key difference.

    I and probably many others do care and don't want to have an emulated environment which is a hit in performance by its self just to be able to play games in our down time.

    I'm not saying you can't game on *nix, I'm saying I enjoy maxing the shit out of my system when gaming and getting the best experience it can offer.
  • 2
    Oh and to clarify, my dev environments and servers are *nix based so I'm not anti-nix by any means, I just know what works best for me and of that means dealing with fires then so be it.

    @C0D4

    Most games get better performance for me with DXVK and better filesystems like xfs, nilfs, and btrfs than they do with dx11/12 and NTFS running in Windows. It's when I switch to the windows machine that I see a performance hit, mostly caused by bad resource management on Windows, along with a mountain of overhead for MS services that I don't use or want, but cannot run the OS without abiding.

    Also, spinning up a ramdisk for even better performance is trivial in linux. I assume it's possible in Windows, but I've never heard of anyone actually doing it. It's my go-to for running demanding games, and it's frustrating that I can't just pop it on with a simple command or alias in windows.

    Games work better and easier on windows. Anyone says otherwise is bullshitter.

    I’m gonna make it easier for everyone. Use Linux if you want to. Use windows if you want to. If you want to use both then use them.

    OP is a classic case of “wooohoooo my idea of right and wrong is the only idea of right and wrong and the disagreeing viewpoint is a tiring argument. And I’ll stretch my viewpoint to force mine down your throat.”

    What an absolute cunt. Don’t be like OP. Don’t be a stupid cuck. Use the tools you like and be happy.

    I really don't understand the obsession with what OS other people use.

    @hatemyjob haha yeah, "use what you like devs, it's all good!"

    @AlmondSauce to get an explanation, please refer to my previous comment.

    @hatemyjob

    That's a lot of rage. You need to find a healthy outlet for it, or it will cause real harm. As for the substance of your comment buried underneath layers of profanity laced anger, my post isn't a classic case of anything. Over and over, I see people post about legitimate annoyances with windows, and windows enthusiasts countering that the OP should shut up and stop trying to evangelize. And then these same windows enthusiasts try to create a false equivalence, saying the argument is a "both sides," issue, and not specifically and consistently a chronicle of the deficiencies of Microsoft Windows.

    When people post moans about Linux, they're a small percentage of the posts about problems with windows, and the vast majority of them are borne of the OP's ignorance of Linux, and not a problem with the OS itself.

    I started this thread because I'm sick of the hypocrisy.

    @jesustricks Retarded response is retarded.

    Read. My. Comment. Slowly.

    You either grossly misunderstood what I wrote or your reading comprehension is shite.

    @bahua Which part of calling you a cunt is rage. And read my comment. Again. Slowly.

    Also if you’re so devoid of self awareness to douse your comment with loads of irony which people who usually post shit like this usually are, then I have nothing to tell.

    This is not even a windows vs Linux issue at this point.

    The idiocy on display. Impressive.

    reading your comments are a waste of time.

    If I read your reply slowly, then I'm just reading angry alt-right insults slowly. I'm done feeding the troll.

    @C0D4 Not just AAA, lots of indie games are compiled for only windows and then there's the dreaded issue with Linux drivers.

    I like knowing I'm properly utilising my expensive GPU.

    Yo mama's dick is on fire, that's all.

    @aviophile And that's basically bullshit as well. Since you're using 'games' which is a plural, you're referring to all games/games in general which would include Linux games (and nintendo-fucking-switch ones as well, for that matter) as well.

    Not saying all games or even close to all games work on Linux but what you're saying is false.
  • 2
    @hatemyjob @C0D4 @aviophile Do keep in mind that not everyone thinks in the 'choose the right tool for the job' way. While that's a good way of thinking IMO, for me ethics/morals and security play a big role as well, hence why I wouldn't use windows/Mac or any other closes source/proprietary system if it'd be my choice.

    @linuxxx nitpicking much?
  • 0
    @linuxxx in your second paragraph, I can see you understand I meant graphics intensive games, which matters for the most people. I do not care if some text based game works 20% faster on linux machines. Why are you countering me with “not all xxx” argument?
  • 1
    @linuxxx that's not what I said... is it?

    I'm not saying linux based DE's aren't the right tool for the job, but for me, they are not the appropriate one yet.

    I'm not flaming against this rant, I'm purely making a point that many devs stick to the Windows world because it's what gives the less friction for day to day things out side of development.

    @jesustricks Android has had way scarier vulnerabilities (often bluetooth based and remotely exploitable), but I don't see the same fuss being made about that 🤷‍♂️

    In any case, I'm not claiming windows is a good OS, nor a secure OS, nor an OS I enjoy using (when I have to.) I just don't understand why people spend so much time trying to convince others not to use it. Not just with OS's, either. I've seen similar debates with everything from filing systems to cloud service providers.

    @aviophile Countering you with that one because its the one I hear the most and since its not true, I hate it when its being used. But especially since Steam Play arrived and loads of games work on Linux due to that (like native often even) I find that misrepresentation very annoying :)
  • 0
    @C0D4 Isn't that what the entire best tool for the job argument is about? (Generally speaking)
  • 0
    I guess the argument is that specifically devs have to ignore that Linux looks like a crossover between a toilet and a Soviet tractor.
