I will soon move to Belgium for a few months due to my wife's job and I will go back to Germany once in a while for a few weeks. Of course I'll need a computer and I can't take my tower back and forth all the time, thus I'll need something more mobile. Since most notebooks <1000€ are shit and I'll also need at least two external monitors, I went for a small (USFF) PC instead; for about 350€ I got a HP ProDesk 400 G5 with a i5-9500T, 8 GB RAM (to be upgraded), 256 GB NVME (also to be upgraded), B360 chipset. I would have liked a Ryzen, but then I could only get the predecessor with a 2400GE...

Hopefully Linux (Qubes OS in particular) will work fine.

    I recently picked up a System76 Meerkat, which is just a rebranded Intel NUC, but it's been a brilliant little plex server. I assume it'd be a brilliant desktop, if there was no need for high-performance 3D graphics.

    @bahua I have had a look at that as well, but it's quite pricey - 862 USD plus shipping plus import tax (19%) for something comparable and then I also need a USB C to DP adapter.

    Another option I have eyed was this Lenovo IdeaPad 14 for 735€, but then I'd also need a dock for the second monitor (another 85€) and I'd be limited to 16GB soldered RAM. Also the display is quite so-so.

    Definitely expensive, as is the case with all their products, but it's worth the extra cost to me, for the excellent support and linux certification, along with the knowledge that I'm financially supporting a local company(I'm in Denver) that specializes in Linux.

    @saucyatom I’m from Belgium and I can confirm that the waffles are pretty good. The Belgian specialties are the “Brusselse wafels” (with whipped cream) and “Luikse wafels” also called “suiker wafels” because they have a lot of sugar in them.

    Nothing against Belgian waffles,,, but I live in Amsterdam, and quite like me some stroopwafels.

    Back to the topic: unless you have insane requirements, a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad or Dell Latitude that you can find for less than €300 should serve you well, and last for years.

    @cedricmeu I'm not a fan of either cream or sugar, but I'll make sure my wife tries!

    @SomeNone The issue is that it needs to be light (max 1.5kg) and also I'll run Qubes OS, which means I want 16+ GB RAM to serve those >10 VMs running all the time. Also two external monitors (which I'll use 95% of the time) means a lot of notebooks are not suitable. Well, I guess that are not quite mainstream requirements anymore ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯

    @saucyatom A good refurbished laptop will be upgradable to at least 16GB RAM.

    @SomeNone I just took a quick look and the best (most recent) options had Dualcore Skylake CPUs (i5-6300U) for a lot of moneys (some 800 Euros, without a decent RAM upgrade). Surely it will run, but I don't think it will meet my expectations.

    I get my nucs from simplynuc.com

    They have better parts options, and all the nuc accessories you don't get elsewhere. They also ship with Ubuntu if that's your thing.
