A few hours ago I got notified that youtube-dl had been subjected to a DMCA takedown from the RIAA (https://github.com/github/dmca/...). I was instantly asked to mirror a known copy of the repository, but was too late to do it.. the other mirror had already been taken down as well. Coincidentally I also had to deal with an attack from 2 email spamhausen at the same time (still ongoing too, but things have settled down). As we frantically started searching for other mirrors we did find another one at https://gitea.eponym.info/Mirrors/.... I've now also mirrored both youtube-dl and NewPipe to https://git.ghnou.su/mir/youtube-dl and https://git.ghnou.su/mir/newpipe respectively.

The reason for it in the DMCA takedown is ridiculous though... There were 3 links to copyrighted videos in the readme file. Yeah.. 3 links, that's what a whole project got taken down for. Sending an email to one of the maintainers or opening an issue was clearly too much work.

If you want to participate in the mirroring process, feel free to use my mirror as a source. I find takedowns like this unacceptable and this software should remain available on the internet, until the youtube-dl developers can appeal for takedown removal or move their project elsewhere. Together we can do it!

What a bunch of greedy fuckers

DMCA takedowns are always guilty until proven innocent. So dumb.

from the comments of the commit in the dmca repo the RIAA doesnt even have the right for a takedown, since they dont have the rights or offering services in germany.

i am talking about germany, because they are comparing us-law with german law.

If you mirror newpipe, you also need to mirror the core component, newpipe extractor: https://github.com/TeamNewPipe/...

@sbiewald Good point! I've now mirrored it to https://git.ghnou.su/mir/....

@stop Oh, seems like it yeah! That would be this thread then: https://github.com/github/dmca/...

You will also find a mirror at the internet archive's way back machine. Most Linux distribution mirrors will also have the youtube-dl package (from which the source code can be extracted). Best of luck

We should get back to video tapes and cassettes so they can fuck off.

Does someone know Icecat, the GNU version if Firefox?

In other browser, the YouTube video is transferred in 10 seconds parts. As downloading it, isn't helpful, Firefox disables "Save video" in the context menu.
Icecat has this feature disabled, thus one can just do shift-rightclick and save the video... (this was even possible before Icecat got an add-on to select different streams)

Popular Repositories have thousands of mirrors, should not be difficult to find one

Never ever have I used it nor felt the need for a tool like this one :) And if you are going popular then make sure you are compliant to the regulations, i.e. remove copyrighted/illegal content from your product. You can do THAT much I guess...

Otherwise, it's just asking for trouble.

I'll setup some download mirror or git mirror as well soon!

    Well done, mate!

    I'm wondering...
Would it be feasible to host stuff like this on a hidden service? Nobody would know the location and it would be pretty much impossible to take down.

    Codeberg has a up-to-date mirror

So they claim it's illegal to share YouTube links?

@Frederick Yeah well copyright is cancer but corporations like to suck dicks with each other so we will see more and more github repos taken down. Music industry at this point doesn’t differ from mafia. They can sue you for making music and destroy you cause you didn’t joined their family.

It’s a well known problem of greed. If people just stop working for corporations the problem would disappear by itself.

It should be noted that the three videos weren't in the readme, they were test cases.

Apparently some people went further than just cloning the repo: https://bleepingcomputer.com/news/...

    We don’t need RIAA

@lamka02sk RIAA claimed that Limewire owes them 72 trillion dollars in damages. They settled in the end for 105mil.
