@linuxxx similar but blokada looks like it connects to an actual vpn to handle dns blocking.
Adblock ^^ utilises the VPN connectivity in iOS and blocks DNS locally, more local proxy then it is vpn. -

The reason devRant doesn't have ads is that most of its userbase will have adblockers installed.
