Noise helps blot out your thoughts, but is familiar enough to not distract you? Yup, sounds familiar.

I've felt that if you play new songs or songs at random, your brain will waste at least a tiny fraction of processing power trying to figure out what comes next. It's easy getting distracted with "oh here comes the good part"

That's why I prefer looping through the same playlist in order

I have a playlist of a couple dozen songs that I play on repeat, but once I get in the zone I don't hear the music anyways.
