WSL is not a replacement for virtualbox, and VB is a helllllll of a lot more stable.
🤦♂️some people put way to much trust into MS these days, I use windows, but I trust it to break randomly 🥲 -
sariel84473y@Ranchonyx @C0D4 hadn't heard of it.
I'll definitely check it out before offloading this pile of shit OS.
Thanks -
If you have git installed you can use ssh on git console. You can also setup aliases and add executables. Not a full environment, but not WSL either.
-
asgs112753yInstall your favourite Linux distro and be done with it
What leadership work requires you to use Windows? -
By the way: Windows has an integrated SSH client. You may need to activate it, but then you get the regular OpenSSH like on Linux.

sariel84473y@asgs zoom, any MS office app (I hate the web ones), teams, slack, Outlook.
Zoom and slack won't work for my distro because Wayland fails to share desktops, and 99% of the time I'm sharing a desktop.
Teams is used to interact with customers.
Outlook has zero feature parity between the local and web options.
I deal with generating reports for leadership, this includes adding formatting, filtering, and computations. Libra just isn't the same, and if I hand something over to these guys made in Libra that isn't just "open and read", they'll complain the file is broken.
I also have to write up requirements documentation and contracts that usually get sent to a bunch of non-technical people as well. -
asgs112753yZoom, Teams work ok on my X11 Ubuntu
I use the web version of slack and outlook and it is quite fine. And I hardly use Libre office. Google office/MS Office online is suitable to do all the tasks I have had to do before
Still, I don't see a strong need to be stuck with Windows. Linux is not great but it works. Most of the times -
Yeah WSL should just be considered an "interesting toy" in my opinion.
I have a Linux PC for work (more CPU cores, RAM & HDD space), and a Windows machine for Gaming & Adobe (More SSD & graphics power).
I use NoMachine (a pretty neat remote desktop app) over a 10Gbit cable in case I don't feel like walking between my gaming desk and my home office. -

@tragicwhale As much as I personally hate OSX with a passion, it's not the worst option for development and daily productivity.
-
@bittersweet Im in your boat. I got a new job and it was only after I accepted the role that I realized it was an apple shop. First time using apple and you are right, for development it hasn't been bad, dare I say, pretty good actually. From what I read about the M1 chip, it is really good. I have the Mac Pro 16 with the intel chip.

@tragicwhale
It's just a different philosophy. Apple is like: "We know what works".
And usually, they're right.
It's just that in rare cases, they're kind of subjectively wrong, and you can't easily change the decision they've made for you either, you just have to wait and hope they'll fix it in the future.
If you can live with that loss of agency and customization, then OSX is not a bad choice.
For me personally, the Linux PopOS distribution also has a high "works-out-of-the-box" score, but gives more options. -
JsonBoa30143yMicrosoft hates everyone who dares use a non-microsoft product on "their" computers. Including WSL, chrome and steam. That's why they make it as hard as possible to do anything.
-
hjk10156963yWayland and pipewire works but unfortunately the apps don't support it and teams is crap on any distro/configuration. Works ok on OSx though
-
PAKA8883ySame shit here. Last update even nuked my console color reverting it to default. Like what the hell how is that even part of system update process?

God damn fucking Windows bullshit.
Why is the fuck does Microsoft HATE its users?
Latest updates, and no fuck Windows 11, completely BREAKS all of my WSL environments.
Home directories are gone, or the environments are corrupt and won't even run.
99% of the issues these dense shit-fucks cause are because they RaNdOmLy reboot for their dumbass updates instead of scheduling them with the end user. During these rebots, do you thing they wait for everything to shut down?
HELL NO!
They just shut that shit down like they fucking own it. Editors? Gone. Browsers? Gone. WSL Consoles? Gone. Docker containers? Gone. IEdge? Hey, we have great news, we made IE your default browser again! BTW, your upgrade to Windows 11 is free until we force you to upgrade!
I'm so fed up with it.....so fucking tired of it...
The only reason why I even use WSL these days is to ssh into my Linux devices or run some quick dev tests in containers. Why not use PuTTY for SSH? Because it fucking SUCKS that's why.
I'm feeling so many emotions right now over bullshit that shouldn't even be happening. I'm literally at the point that I'm just going to install Linux on this device and just create a Windows VM on one of my hosts so I can still do "work" things that involve leadership.
