It is about a missing hardware digital restriction management device.

Mass surveillance as a feature requires specific hardware.

@joewilliams007 Some video-on-demand services will definitely require that DRM device to be present for ultra-HD content to be available. That is, why Microsoft wants you to have that chip on the board. They want to keep Windows being associated to "it just works" media consumption and gaming. And they likely will succeed at least in the PC gaming sector because AAA-game publishers will love being able to use hardware DRM without having to ship a dongle.

Or maybe, they got a national security letter...

At the end, there probably will be a way to install Windows 11 without having that chip. As usual, there will be some hoops to jump through, to get it working and it will just work like before even though some services and games will refuse to work without that chip.

Of course they also like people buying their (actually pretty good for that form factor) Surface "convertibles". But that surely isn't the reason for insisting on the newest DRM chip.

@Oktokolo Yes well my pc wasnt compatible and i changed some regedit values to make it compatible.

All though it ran smoothly (out of the box), the bloatware made me switch to linux

Soo i dont really get your comment sooo mcuh because windows 10 also worked on many devices? (Except if ram was to low)

@joewilliams007 There was bad press because some streaming services required specific CPUs and somehow Microsoft has been hit by it. So now they make sure, that everything running Windows 11 also has the newest DRM. So that services can just require Windows 11 and be sure that the DRM support is there.

It is all about marketing and getting services to bind themselves to Windows 11 - to make the common consumer think, that it is the only OS where everything just works. as a Linux user you know how it is with the "but you have to be a nerd to run it" myths. They really decay slowly...
