Download vscode or editor of choice, update windows, make sure key binding are ok, update windows, prepare coffee for morning, update windows, make a lunch, update windows, install Linux. Should be set after that
-
@phat-lasagna i think he already knows that and is only pursuing this career because he hates life already
-
C0D4669442y@darksideofyay then all is well, one must enjoy hating one's life to enjoy being a dev, it really doesn't work any other way.
-
JsonBoa29922y"Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit... sed programmatorii"
Or, on a shameless pig latin translation, "There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain... except for devs" -
I'd suggest reading a book on one of the core technologies he'll be using. Adds to your knowledge, gets you used to thinking about and working with someone else's code and ways of doing things.
-
@ScribeOfGoD I don't get it, why would I do any of that to prepare for working?
-
Voxera113972yIf he is starting job I guess he has done some studying so is the question about how to then succeed?
It will depend on the company but i my opinion, never stop learning and never forget the end customer.
If that does not work well in the company, at least try to use the company as a platform to find a better one.
Its always hardest to land the first job, once you have one its often easier to get noticed if looking for dome better one. -
Buy a massive ball of yarn. Find some cats to play with it. Untangle it all. Then he’ll be ready.
Wax on. Wax off. -
sariel84462yGive him a jar of Vaseline and a Garfield mug that hates Mondays.
That's all he'll need to be prepared. -
@ScribeOfGoD yeah but like what purpose would they have on my private laptop?
-
@LotsOfCaffeine are you preparing for your first coding gig? First gives the impression of never doing it before… so you’d want your device in order before you being working with it correct?
-
@ScribeOfGoD why would I be working with my own laptop/PC when the company has to provide a work machine?
Thats the part I don't understand -
@LotsOfCaffeine some companies don't provide a computer. his does though, it's a big company
-
kiki349482y- maintain strict and sustainable sleep schedule. Bad sleep for a month means your career in this company is over
- focus on learning software architecture -
@darksideofyay
He should be just himself.
Use the probation time to find out wether it's ok or not.
Separate the tasks given from the actual work - e.g. if it's a shitty codebase and shitty jobs, but he likes the coding, he shouldn't be demotivated, rather look for another job. -
@darksideofyay damn that sounds horrible
And kind of illegal (at least where I live) -
@iArrow yes, meditation has been clinically proven to help improve the overall states of peacefulness and mental well-being and balance, which are things you will very quickly start expending lots of, as soon as you start working as a programmer :)
-
@Midnight-shcode *yes but guided meditation is recommended for people that suffer from anxiety. introspection can make people more anxious. it's not one size fits all
-
@LotsOfCaffeine only if they’re a good company, even then who’s to say they’d set up your dev environment, even if they did are you sure it’s to your liking and sets you up for success at said company? Companies don’t hold your hand lol
-
@ScribeOfGoD my god this reminds me how glad I should be to live in Germany
The bar has been in the basement for other places in the world
Like what do you mean only a "good company" provides their workers with uh... the tools to do their work? -
@LotsOfCaffeine i just did a rant about this lol https://devrant.com/rants/6122056/...
we do have company issued computers, but due to security and legal stuff they block the installation of anything they didn't approve, which is basically everything. i don't think that's because they're cheap though, i think that's just bad management.
i did work for start ups and 2 out of 3 didn't provide computers -
@darksideofyay there's dozens of types of meditation, not all of them are about introspection.
bf is starting his first job as a dev and asked me how to prepare. i had no clue what to tell him lol. any suggestions?
