Why doesn't companies give Alienware for devs instead of a Dell Latitude ???

They can at least provide 👽 backpack, if not the laptop itself ☹️

Respectfully excluding MacBook from this rant !!

I complained about my PC for about 9 months and then I was given an MSI ms-1759 (18 months ago)... In general I just keep asking for stuff and after a while they must realize "well this guy just wont shut up"... Keep it up.

Why would you need alienware for dev?

The best laptop for work is either a thin portable ultrabook with enough juice, or a powerful powerhouse with the best CPU and the most RAM, but thicker and much more durable. Alienware is soft, and you pay a lot for something that's not required unless you're a 3D game developer or you're developing some gpgpu solutions.

Alienware can lick lick lick my balls!

Lenovo probably has the best laptops for devs these days, their high end thinkpads are really awesome and quite reasonably priced, + you can throw them at people who annoy you when necessary.

@apisarenco you are right.. any laptop with a decent amount of memory, a processor from 3rd gen upwards and preferably an SSD should work. For my work, will need to run one or two VMs along with my local dev setup.

But, when the ones already provided are not very cheap themselves, which also need to be upgraded time to time, why don't just go ahead and provide a high end one ?

Anyways, I am not the one paying for it, so don't have a choice. Just have to live with what was given :( :( :(

Alienware is overpriced crap, that's why.

Because you can get business support directly from dell

We use Dell where I'm at and it's perfect! However the ones we are using are very high-end.

@ItsNotMyFault Something similar to the Dell Precision series ? Even their power adapters can be used to hurt someone seriously :(

@noder I love those things :) I stole one from engineer at my last job (it was a machine shop kinda place) that sucker did ANYTHING I told it too.

    Alienware can eat a dick.
Either use a Lenovo Thinkpad, HP Elitebook or Dell XPS 13, but not that teenie uber-g4m3r crap. 😉

I'm having a Razer keyboard, and I must say I will NEVER use a non-gaming keyboard anymore.

I was asked to build an iOS app using Swift in my old job, guess what I was given a windows desktop PC, kept throwing excuses until 7 months later they bought me a Mac mini 😒

    @xurei welcome to dev rant!

@xurei Until you discover the bliss of Ergodox with Cherry MX blue/green, at which point you throw your razer out of the window.

Also fuck laptops. I'm still using my (Linux) MacBook, but after building a Ryzen 7 system at home I'm thinking of setting up a desktop at work as well. I just love how it absolutely devours unit tests in parallel, while sanitizing a 1TB database dump, while watching YouTube videos.

Fuck mobility, if I'm in a coffee shop I'm going to enjoy coffee, if I'm in a park I'm going to chase butterflies and make out. Development should be done in a dark cave behind a dozen monitors on a loud keyboard and a beast of a machine.
