Please disregard. I just need to vent.

Being a manager is so fucking shit. This is not even about devs or tech specific only. Never become a manager.
Why? Because it’s about handling people and all the dumb shit they do. It’s all about knowing what people suck at and preventing that weakness from leaking into other areas. The amount of fucked up people on this earth means that you have to work with at least some of them, and that means putting up with their stupid ass list of super special requirements, that if they do not fulfill, will make them a shit worker. It’s not even an issue of technical skills.

You have the guys that are often late, because “they have depression”, but will complain that “companies don’t treat employees like adults”. Being on time for work is apparently very difficult. Which doesn’t generally matter in general for dev work, but it ends up affecting other things.

You have the completely socially inept idiots that make half the team hate them and try to avoid working with them, increasing problems and work for other people. Just because they’re socially stupid, have low or no empathy, or are incapable of not being insufferable to others.

You have the people that are so bad at estimating that they keep making up numbers instead of waiting to think for a few minutes and say “ not sure, I need to research and estimate that”.

You have the surprise absentee for dumb as fuck reasons like “my phone died lol sorry”. They never do anything to actually improve, it is just “sorry guys! Btw I will do jackshit about this”.

Or the ones whining about virtually everything, all the time. Wtf why do I have to be on scrum at 12 tomorrow?! Wtf why do I have to record the result of that customer call? Wtf why should I talk with XYZ?

And if you leave them alone, everything burns. They actually need someone to tell them “hey mate you need to improve that, shall we plan something to do so?”. I think managers are useless and unneeded when you have adults working, but it seems like most of the population is composed of children. It’s basically another form of daycare.

And you have to prepare shit around all of these constraints.

Then you have the one guy that reads the requirements, has common sense, and is inoffensive and can work like a normal adult human that needs no baby sitting. A ray of light on this shitshow.

I just want to go back to pure dev.

    I am the one who is often late.

    However, company did treat me like an adult, and never pushed me on it when they learned that I have IBS, and an usually chained to the toilet by the time they want me there.

    A good manager's work is figuring out these little things with their team and make it so it can function nonetheless.

    sorry, I'm biased, but I hate managers and don't think this job should exist. managers are band-aids for broken corporate structures that temporarily treat the symptoms without addressing the cause.

    I'm a bit radical on this. there is nothing you can say to reconvince me, it's completely emotional and not rational.

    I understand managers are the product of capitalist structures, yet still, fuck you and your management position. fuck your manager colleagues as well.

    I believe that we need "managers" as in people who coordinate work in and between teams. But also I strongly believe that managers should be democratically approved by the teams, preferably elected from amongst workers.

    I mean I empathize with you as a human being and wish you the best because no one should suffer from corporate greed, but I hate your occupation. You deserve respect as a human, but also don't deserve it because you're a manager.

    That's an undeniable fact imho.

    Whether you call it team lead, manager or whatever.

    Someone has to keep shit going and things in order.

    @kiki we always make jokes about me being a manager, because they know I hate it and would rather be coding. Most of my work is still coding, mind you. Good fellas all of em, sometimes it just gets to me.

    So someone has to make sure that everyone gets treated fairly.

    I just pointed out that any group of humans needs some kind of leadership.

    For starters, leadership has nothing to do with pyramid vs horizontal organisation.

    What I stated, just to repeat it: Every group of humans needs a leader.

    Even in a flat / horizontal organisation, employees are organized in teams and these teams will have a role for "stewardship". Nice rephrasing, still same meaning - someone who is responsible for the red tape, supporting team members etc.

    There is no form of collective organization without some kind of authority / leadership / organization.

    And no, creating teams of single people (1 team = 1 person) doesn't fix shit either.

    I'm really annoyed by the bullshit ideas some people have stuck in their mind.

    There's a lot of bad management / leadership / stewardship out there...

    But it's not helping to idolize unrealistic fantasies.

    I probably won’t change my habits lol - because it’s an inherently a battle. You sound like a good manager though.

    I feel like most people wanna do good, it’s just tapping into the correct motivations… maybe some people need less pressure and some people need more? Idk… I do feel like I do not want to be a manager post-dev tho

    And he can't get it done either because one guy isn't doing his end of the job at all, and the other person he's working with is having a drug-fueled temper tantrum because they are a child in an adults body.

    The lowest common denominator drags everyone down.

    Most industry has become a mire of shit like this. Total dysfunction interfering with the basic ability to get anything done efficiently, even for the people who just want to shut up and do the work.

    Most managers are forced to become supervisors, which is another word for babysitters because of all of what you said.

    Never work anywhere, where the managerial role is titled "supervisor", because that just means the company has gone so far off the deep end, that they've simply given up.
