We were running an obfuscator as part of our build pipeline, but also were not. I discovered we had disabled every rule, and after asking around it turns out that the obfuscator broke the app (because of reflection and things I won't go into).

So I turned it off.

An hour later the CTO came to me and said to put it back. "We have to obfuscate, put it back."

"But... it wasn't doing anything, other than slowing the build down."

"I don't care, we HAVE to run obfuscation. It's in our contract with the client."

...

Built a whole test suite around our Laravel app which has been pointed out to exec as slowing down CI and yielding no value to the user.

Arguing it’s ensuring something our users is using doesn’t accidentally break just gets brushed off as incompetence.

Oh well, I’ll just skip tests in CI and continue writing and running tests on my own as I don’t feel confident just cowboy fixing things.

Work story.
We have this system that's being used nation-wide and basically there's a control panel for management (it's a website)) and an app for the regular users.

I just migrated and replaced the guy before me, I'm basically the only one on the project.

The code for the website is a mess, the servers are sometimes slow, and few security problems here and there.

Project Lead comes up to me and says that few of our clients that use the website are saying it works really slowly.
I start by analyzing the networking, and found shocking things.
First of all, let's say there's a messaging option, and the management teams that are our clients can have each a lot of groups, which all have messaging.

Upon first load, ALL OF THE IMAGES, FROM ALL GROUPS, ARE PRE LOADED. It can get up to few hundred photos being preloaded upon first load, which can explain the slow loading.
After discovering that, I discovered that the Administration control panel, which only my project lead can access, with sends heavy requests to the server and loads heavy assets, is loaded every time to every single client, generating heavy stress on our server and slowing everything down.

I tell that to my project lead and say that that's what causing the slow downs, I coded a fix that currently sits and is not being merged to the master branch to be deployed, and somehow I need to find a way to fix the slowness which all comes down to the heavy requests and slow connection with servers... And they won't merge my fix that fixes the loading of the administration panel so the stress on the servers could go down, and everything will be sped up....
Ah damnit.. sometimes I don't understand it..

TL;DR The "senior dev", that the client hired on their end, is acting as a middleman between me and the project requestors. Taking the credit for my work.

I've already bitch about this before. I've been in a crusade to defend the production server from this fraud for a long time now.

But most recently he has removed me from all meetings with the actual project owner. I create the solutions, then he goes through them to understand it a bit. He proceeds to present it to the project owner in a way that almost blatantly says that he made it.

I'm sick and tired of working with this asshole. He is literally useless, worse he is slowing things down and breaking others.

I'm just gonna begin countering this...

Management suddenly decides they wanted to see if a new process is any good and decides to load all the work on 2 people ( including me ) and keeps the deadline 5 days later ( when one person is taking a 3 day leave in this 5 days ).

In this situation, the other person involved in the process, routinely infuriates me by suggesting we fix up something within these days and not worry about readability or code quality. My argument is the POC is subject to heavy changes, so why not make it more "modifiable" from the start and not create a sphagetti which i would be left trying to fix when he goes on leave.

I would be blamed for slowing down things unnecessarily if i put forward my argument too sternly. Genuinely conflicted about whether to go on the offensive or to accept the reality and make myself uncomfortable by doing this faster.

Is it #slowFriday, or is the lack of net neutrality slowing things down already? 😜

I work at a small shop.

Just a few devs and a handful of other people.

Good people. Even before COVID I worked from home a great deal.

But man there was always a lot to do at a small shop with priorities changing based on this customer's need or that one.

Now with COVID things are slowing down a bit and I can see some light at the end of the tunnel of my backlog.

I really would like to do some serious refactoring of an application I wrote, I'm embarrassed everytime I have to fiddle with it ;)
