I've come back to devRant after, don't know, 2 years, and I get the feeling that this place is much more... hostile than I remembered.
I understand that this is a place to let out frustrations and vent a bit, or post stories and stuff, but I browsed the comments of a few rants, and I'm surprised at how many times I see friction between users, and insults thrown around.
Maybe I shouldn't have come back here

Last week I had an initial interview for a mid-senior C# position, and I got asked to do a technical test to check on my actual skills.

The problem is that the skills required to meet all the criteria in said test are far beyond my actual knowledge, so I'm 100% sure I'm going to fail the test.

Now, the question is, should I be honest with the person that's going to review whatever I manage to do, and tell them upfront that I've never done this or that? Should I even try to do it on the test, even if it's the first time I try to do some of the points mentioned on the criteria?

It's the first time this happens to me, and I'm tempted to just tell them I don't feel capable of completing it, and leave it there.

For the next 2 months, I'm forced to migrate documentation from one site to another, correcting the formating if needed.

What did i do to deserve this?

To be honest, sometimes i feel like my worst career choice was to become a developer.

I don't have any 'home setup' (it's just a laptop), so instead I'll post my office one.

It's always a bit messy, so bear wirh me :p

Looks like Steam is launching a beta of a modified version of Wine, so windows games can be played on Linux too.

I'm seriously considering going back to Ubuntu now.

In our self-developed intranet, i added a hidden script that fires an 'event' when you enter the konami code.

Said event it's simply turning thw screen contrast to 200% and play the audio of 'omae wa mou shindeiru'.

I was planning to make some more of those, but i don't have the time to do them ;_;

The most satisfying bug, the fucking mosquitoes at night, after buzzing around my head or hours. Fixed them by fucking smashing them on the wall with a shoe.

On my previous job, any problem that my egocentric idiot that i had as PM couldn't solve and i could, was satisfying to solve.

I have to confess... that i prefer my coffee to be lukewarm or cold, rather than warm.

So many bad dev habits...

But the one that results in the biggest headaches afterwards?

Me, when given a problem and being asked an estimated time: 'This shouldn't be too hard, gimme X to do it', only to later find out it's way harder than i imagined.

- Learn any language beside the ones I use at work
- Have a beta of a game I've been thinking about for some time
- Find a coder friend

I would be happy by just accomplishing one of them ;_;

I did some general searches in the actual project. The names of 22 variables and attributes I created contain the word 'shit', and 5 contain 'fuck'.

So I was wondering, in this era of technology, with so many tools and options to take and share notes, who does still prefer to take notes on paper?

While I use tools like Trello to list all the tasks with the team, for my own notes I use paper sheets, as I find easier to check on them.
Besides, if I'm stuck with something, I can doodle a bit (I even use a pencil instead of a pen :p)

Fellow devranters, I need your help for a... NodeJS question... (and I won't bother asking the question on SO, because all the questions/answers I found won't work)

You see, this client we have says they want their app to be login-less; once the app starts, ir automatically knows who is the ldap user that 'logged' in the app.

I've been struggling with it for weeks, trying to use npm modules, retrieving info from process.env, and I'm sure it is completely impossible without at least providing a username.

So here I am, asking anyone out here who can answer me this question: is it possible to login without providing anything?

I see a lot of people on this weekly rant telling they go lunch, read a book, play guitar...

Guess I should write a rant now.

We were initially a team of 2 to do a 'simple' app with AngularJS, NodeJS and Kendo UI in 2 months.

We had some problems with it, mainly because I'm 'in charge' of a big Java web application filled with legacy code and in process of a 'big change that was planned to be deployed for all users yesterday', and my coworker (also the project analyst) was still learning how Node and Angular work. And I'm not going to lie, I'm still learning new things everyday.

Situation 1 month after our start: coworker fired (due to offtopic reasons), replaced by a younger girl, and me still doing changes in the Java webapp.

Thank god I work better when under big pressure :p
