My company actually does this. In practice it's basically just an extra vacation day since there's no requirement to actually take it on your birthday, which makes it even better.
-
yea I'm not exaggerating, last time RSA ran one of these professional security people were leaking TONS of sensitive info onto twitter. Do you honestly think there's not a single piece of data useful to an attacker in any of the pics that have gone up so far? Even just seeing a directory structure can be a massive head start in a targeted attack.
-
Unless literally every single person with source code in their pics is working on an entirely open source project, yes it's a big problem, for a lot of reasons, from the obvious leak/posting of potentially (likely) copywrighted material to less obvious things like revealing implementation details. Hackers and pen testers live on OSINT and posting pics of this kind of thing is like xmas for them.
-
@Irithyll Everyone's desk pics today, there's source code and terminal sessions up on virtually every screen
-
@Root Except even doing that can technically be considered destruction of company property. At least here in the US if it happened on a company PC the company owns it until they expressly relinquish control. So you can end up sued anyway.
-
@Gregozor2121 MAC is pretty much worthless too, the vast majority of modern NIC's will allow you to modify your MAC.
-
This reminds me of PC's still coming with a "turbo" button long after that feature disappeared from the motherboards inside.
-
Everything but the chicken, but only because I don't really do frontend.

@2lazy2debug I love RDS but the cost thing is a trap. Most thin clients with enterprise support cost as much as a decent laptop ($400 or so for a cheap one last I checked) plus the cost of the servers and licenses and it ends up being about the same from a CapEx point of view. The savings come about from the mgmt and security side since you only have one or a few machines to update and the productivity side since your users can log in and work from any machine (that's particularly nice in BYOD situations)

Completely believe it, at one of my internships we had a student in the masters program at our top local college, who had just transferred from MIT. On their first day they asked me how to open the CD drive on their desktop...
And before ne1 asks it was a traditionally designed drive that had a button just below the tray. Can also confirm it was NOT a joke. -
@Axis Did they actually re-launch the product? Last I checked they were just talking about it/working on new version.
-
I think early use cases are going to largely be business/industrial but it shows some real promise there.
Personally kind of excited about the idea of being able to have much smarter remote hands for infrastructure field work. It will be amazing when I can actually see what the tech 3000 miles away is seeing and just draw on their view what needs to be plugged in or whatever rather than spending hours describing it and drawing on smartphone pictures in MS Paint. -
Try working on a project that generates error messages that contain the words "Failed for some reason" and give no other info beyond the thing that failed.
-
@Seby This is actually happening, sort of. While you sleep your unconscious brain works on the problems your conscious brain experienced during the day. Those early morning revelations are frequently things that you literally figured out while you slept and just took some time after waking to worm their way into your conscious mind.
-
@phreakyphoenix This is why I love the fact that my boss works a few hundred miles away. Forces him to measure my productivity in terms of output rather than what he can infer from what he sees on my screen.
-
OMG so much this.
The worst part is that I know the best solution is probably to stop working and let my brain work on the problem while I sleep but always feel like I'm SO CLOSE to the answer that I can't pull myself away. -
I think there's a disconnect between what most people would feel comfortable showing off and what a hiring manager is looking for in a side project.
Most of them realize that you aren't really building them to be used in a production environment and haven't put in that level of polish, so it's more about seeing the things you can do rather than picking it apart looking for bugs and errors. -
@bahua it's still a thing, although from what I've seen it's mostly closed-loop systems now. Still can't figure out what the benefit is when most of the pre-configured systems with water cooling ship with stock clocks so they don't violate the OEM's warranties...

Steve Jobs credited LSD with at least part of his success, so maybe you just need to be ON drugs to properly appreciate xCode?

@rant1ng
Thank you!
That evaluation criteria just got put into my workflowy right above the list of ideas I keep, planning to go through and evaluate the existing ones this weekend. -
For me the two biggest roadblocks are finding a solid idea that could actually turn into a sellable product and then trying to market/advertise that thing.
I've got a big list of ideas but most of them feel like either too small a problem or like they would be incredibly difficult to monetize. -
On the up side most people I know hated their first tech job but once you get a little experience the job search process becomes exponentially easier so you'll be able to be a lot more selective with your next gig. You'll also have a better idea of what you like/don't about your current job and can use that to ask better questions during the interview process.

I'd call Java a lot of things but elegant definitely isn't one of them.
