Why do people dislike/hate LinkedIn? Does anyone here feel the same?

The pretentiousness and fake inspirational bullshit that's all over it

It's not particularly valuable for you and it only serves to validate the continued entrenchment of recruitment firms that act as gatekeepers between you and jobs, further justifying bad corporate commoditization of skilled engineering labor

It's mostly a lot of bullshit. Sadly it's also the number one source for recruiters. Not because it's good, but because that's where they find most people. It's a bad loop. I work at a recruitment firm, so trust me when I say that you want to be on LinkedIn.

Every action on that site is a risk of sending all kinds of notifications to everyone. Also, usually the app sends a push notification and when you go look, there are no notifications.

I used to think it had potential if I needed a change of job. It has just become another social media platform full of the same trash as facebrick, Twitter, and the rest. If it was still only professional related and didn’t involve every dipshit’s opinion on the “cause du jour” it might hold value but it’s likely beyond repair at this point.

I don't use it for the social side. It's been handy finding jobs in the pass, update your profile to "looking for work" and hunting season is on.

Tie this up with our local one (seek) and they have your contact details in seconds, who needs privacy when you are looking for another job?

All the messages I get are in the form of

"Hello, I see you're a senior Java developer in the UK, would you be interested in a Python role in Brazil?"

All the posts I see are in the format of

"I'm so humble, so lucky and so amazed to announce (x selfish thing I've done that's so amazing)"

...or...

"Hey, look at me put on my fake sales voice and pretend this product is so revolutionary/cool/interesting"

It's like some weird professional dick bashing contest, and I really can't be arsed to participate.

What do you expect from a platform where people wear ties in profile photos?
When someone posts stupid inspirational quote on FB, at least someone might respond with „that’s BS”. This doesn’t happen on LinkedIn. Everyone keeps their „professional attitude” not to scare the recruiters.

For example, my former company has recently bragged about the fact that they planted a tree. A single (one, 1) tree. That’s so much BS given how much the executives fly for useless meetings and in what industry they operate. However, I don’t call them out. I’m a proffesional.

I don't even use my LinkedIn account, haven't for several years. What makes me absolutely hate them is the spam. They use "dark patterns" in their UI to trick users into sending spam to the user's contacts list. I do think I tried clicking one of those "stop sending me spam" links in their emails once, and yet they just kept sending me more shit, so I just blocked their emails entirely and flagged every single one I had received.

I myself quite like it, often due to a garbage employer I'm forced to look for work on an ASAP basis, and it links me with people who can get me a decent paying job within a week.

I'll be the odd one out.

When I lost my job last fall and wanted to switch to development the outplacement bureau helped me update and fine-tune my LinkedIn profile.

Sure, I got contacted by some recruiters, and those contacts didn't lead to a lot, but I also got contacted by several hr managers in larger companies and the CEO of a smaller company. I landed a couple offers and accepted one and am overall very happy with LinkedIn as a contact platform.

As with any social media though, results may vary.

I dont dislike or hate LinkedIn. I just think it's utterly useless and whenever I have to interact with it I am annoyed.

Kinda like if Facebook and Google are your nipples then Linked in is the third nipple.
