Froggo is right, just have a decency to research what’s running in the background and how hot are cpu and gpu, how bad is hdd or ssd

@frogstair then it's probably something that I left unchecked.

@uyouthe as far as background processes are concerned I did look into it. It's mostly an issue with startup time. At times it takes a good three to four minutes to start processing linting errors or analyzing imports.
Initially I thought it had something to do with the js/ts language feature extension. It gets stuck at initializing and pretty much stays there.
But that wasn't it either.
Other than that, I'm using hyper. After about an hour or so it starts slowing down noticably.

@boomgoat looks like leaks but I don’t think it’s them. Check temperatures, seems like throttling

@boomgoat how many extensions do you have installed? That may be contributing a lot to startup time.

@iiii a few. The current job requires work in multiple areas. I have 10 active extension at the moment.

I have two SSD's installed. Shouldn't be an issue regarding storage. Throttling just by running chrome? Isn't that something I should be worried about?

@boomgoat no, throttling because your i7 is hot and your cpu cooler is trash or thermal paste turned into shit. Check on this

@uyouthe that could be possible. It's an hp probook and last time I checked they did have heating issues. I got it around 3 to 4 years ago. Although I was hoping the thermal paste would last another year.
I'll check it out. Maybe the fans clogged up. Thank you! It isn't that bad yet but I was definitely starting to get worried about it. I'll check it out!

@boomgoat oh that’s a laptop 😞 I only use passively cooled laptops because of their fan issues no matter the brand

Well I have an external fan sitting right next to the laptop. 😅
I'm using a dual monitor setup so my laptop is usually docked.

@uyouthe yup. Although it handles it pretty well. Using the current machine for gaming as well. As far as budget laptops are concerned I feel like this one was a pretty good choice.
The lag could be because of the extensions.
I'm running wsl2 with ohmyzsh running on hyper. Also using docker.
I think the accumulative load combined with windows bloateware kills the performance from time to time.

@boomgoat yes. I wasn’t saying YOUR laptop is bad, I said ALL active cooled laptops are prone to cooler clogging and it’s fundamental

@uyouthe haha no I got that. It was just an observation from my part. Wasn't going against what you said. Personally I'm a bit against the idea of laptops as a whole. 😅

If you just upgraded your ram and vscode is running like garbage without any plugins, verify that the timings are right in the bios and that the set actually works. Also remember that non-vendor-certified ram for a given motherboard isn't guaranteed to work. Definitely check the ram comparability list.

If chrome opens slowly or you have to let it warm up before using; then something might be wrong with your hard drive lol. IDK but that happened to me when I had a bad hard drive, check the write and read speeds of your hard drive. If they are too low, that might be the issue.

Just recenlty, I've upgraded my tower from
16 GB to 32GB ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Chrome was totally fine though. In fact, everything was fine. RAM just got cheaper and I wanted it.)

The last time I upgraded to (!) 16GB RAM was in 2010.
