C0D4669034yBecause ain't no one give two hoots about a useless meme reposted for the billionth time only to spread its wings and land on devRant.
So many people filter out rant types we have no interest in seeing, and despite this, users will be users and get even a basic "what kind of shit am I posting this time" selection wrong. -
iiii90854yBecause it is easy to do it right and not annoy anyone. If you're a developer you're supposed to be a bit smarter than an average Joe.
-
I agree with @iiii. It's a matter of simple respect. You've got to be a reader before you write, and this applies to social medium of choice. Tagging and other shenanigans will have impact, because they are part of content too.
-
Honestly I am with OP on this one. Some members here make it like the Spanish Inquisition in regards to tagging and yeah sure, throw rocks of shame to the newbies.
Remember how any of you was a noob once.
It could be less SO-ish if people would be a little chill about this. -
iiii90854y@NeatNerdPrime I remember even more: the time when there were no category tags. They were created with a reason and some lazy newbies seem to not understand that. It was annoying to not have any ability to filter low level noise, and it is even more annoying when some "whatever" newbie ignores the tags and forces something you've filtered out to appear.
-
Maer16874yThis always used to be somewhat entertaining to me. Many users on this platform criticise SO for not being welcoming, especially when SO newcomers ask redundant, misplaced or poorly formulated questions, which don't adhere to formatting standards.
But then these users do the same thing here by going insane about post tagging. They "don't give a hoot" about that thousandth meme that was posted tons of times before and mistagged, just like SO users "don't give a hoot" about a repeatedly asked problem wearing a slightly different hat, mistagged and poorly formatted.
It's the same exact thing. -
@rox79 I have filtered out the whole joke/meme category because it's a pile of reposted shit from other websites. Improper tagging shoves that shit into my face although I explicitely disabled it.
Improper "devrant" tagging makes it impossible to see at a quick glance whether there's something new about devrant.com.
And also, who the fuck would think the "devrant" tag would mean "developer rant"? As opposed to fucking what? All the rants by the HR, finance, and sales folks here?
If someone is already too stupid to fucking click the right button, how will such a person code anything that isn't total shit? -
Remember the "dev" part of devRant?
We're all anal about semantics 'cuz that's our job. -
Compared to SO and the like, anyone with at least an average IQ (as @iiii put it well) should be able to correctly classify their post into the right category.
As for the OP, the whole point of devRant is for devs/engs and co to rant/post about such topics, but like in other platforms, many peeps re-posts stuff and populate people's feed. -
sariel84474yCategorization is important. When you don't it's like not indexing your database.
But look on the bright side, at least you got this one right! -
Hazarth94974yWe're programmers...
enum Tag{
Rant, Meme
}
And
Tag.Rant simply != Tag.Meme
If you can't even get tags right, you must be one of those people that constantly fuck everything up...
Get it right and use it as intended... It's really fucking simple to hit the right fucking button

Masta3014ySo many years, that same boring problem again, and still nobody to come with a real solution. Change that bloody "devrant" tag for something more specific. Update existing data if needed for consistency. But for god sake everybody, if you consider yourselves as people paid to find solutions, please, please do better than this endless loop of useless drama ans accusations that should be so easily avoided.
The quality of this community could have been so much better since years now, just by changing this tag once and for all. No more need to warn the newbies. No more drama. No more same boring thread every week.
Or you may just keep going with the endless fight. Sad choice, but hopefully life continues outside of here. -
@Masta It's not about newbies. Remember that this show here is about devs, and people who don't give a fuck and mindlessly click without thinking are not actual devs. They are the very people who make the shit code we are ranting about. Yes, all that bad shit software has to come from somewhere.
-
Masta3014yOkay man, boring as fuck, as always. So much possibilities thrown away by that circlejerk way of thinking but okay.
I'm a dev and still I like communities that are capable to be friendly and to evolve. This place can't do any of those things because it's trapped in a loop about the same boring and useless points of details. In France we have words for that, we say "enculer les mouches".
This community sacrifies its ability to evolve and to be friendly and welcoming, just to fuck flies.
Keep going. I'm bored enough for the next six months. -
@Masta The longer I am on DR, the more I understand why SO is how it is - because welcoming idiots will only attract more of them until you drown in them. You would happily welcome any kind of shit and then leave once the consequences hit in. Because you don't care anyway.
-
Masta3014yHonestly ? I still come here once in a while only to read "stories" for a few minutes. There still are great things written there. The home feed is really different. As it's the main view of the app we could expect to see quality content on it. And that's not the case.
Some will say it's because of the memes. Or because of the newbies. Or because "people are stupid".
I think all of these statements are wrong. From my perspective the main problem of the home feed is really that it is BORING. I'm not lying here : EVERYTIME I open the app I feel like 80% of the comments I'm reading are about that "devrant" tag. And maybe once a week there's a thread like this one, throwing questions into the wind and baiting the most frustrated nerds among us to come and vomit all of their hate against the "noobs" and the "stupids".
Honestly I'm here since enough time to see there's an obvious pattern here. The intelligent solution is to break it. Kill the source of all that drama. That's just a tag. -
Masta3014yAll that being said, changing that tag name should be considered only because saying "devrantrant" is much more fun anyway.
-
Masta3014yJust a last thing. Try to think at this from another perspective :
Imagine you have a pet project. Imagine that project is a social network for fans of Marvel charachters. You decide to call it "marvel-heroes" and you put all tour time and effort to build the best app you can. You add tagging features and chose without thinking the name of the app itself to post your first welcoming messages for the community.
Then release day happens. Fans of Marvel are starting to subscribe. A lot of them start to reuse the tag you created because it says exactly what they're came here to talk about : "marvel-heroes".
But that was not the usage you decided for this tag. So you're frustrated. And because you're frustrated you will not see that you just made a simple and easily fixable UX mistake. And so instead of fixing it, you'll start throwing (explicit or implicit) rules at your users and yell on them if they don't follow it.
All of this is ridiculous. Since many years now.
