BASIC! when I was ~9 I made a program in it, taking a name as input returning the color of the shirt that person of my family was wearing. And came back on visual basic a few years later because I loved that little tinkering so much.

@jeffalyanak Wish I could upvote this many more times. I think Algol invented the concept that a language could be elegant, whereas Fortran showed that it could be ugly as hell and still get the job done after a fashion.

Microsoft QuickBASIC on a Mac 512K. I used to write "adventure games" using exclusively GOTOs. 😂

But I absolutely loved it and went on to teach myself C, then C++, and then I went to school and had to learn Java. (We don't speak of those days.)
