TL;DR: If you're an Android user, do yourself a favour and check out https://simplemobiletools.com/ . You're welcome.
Dear diary, today was a good day.
A small part of my faith in humanity was recovered after I found about Tibor Kaputa.
Apparently, this guy - like many of us - was fed up with the bloat, bugs, bullshit and 'features' of many of the stock Android apps that come preinstalled on most phones. And so, he decided to make his own.
Unlike most of us however, he actually pulled through. And then he made them open source.
No bullshit permission requirements.
No ads or tracking.
Custom themes.
And no, not just 'toggle white/dark mode', I'm talking 'pick your own color scheme', both within the app and for the app icon (!).
And then sync your colour scheme across the entire suite of apps (!!).
Simple UI, with a lot of customizable settings.
And if you get them from f-droid, it's all completely free as in BEER too!
I've spent a lot of time in the last year trying to find software that does what it's supposed to do well, without trying to pull any sneaky bullshit in the background or annoy me with crap that I don't care about in a miserable attempt to show off its useless features.
I'm not a fan of Medium myself either, but the author's article about how his suite of apps was born really resonated with me. If you care about privacy, open source software, and doing things right, you should really give it a read: https://medium.com/@tibbi/...
I'm particularly a fan of the Gallery, the File Manager, and the Music player apps, and the others don't look half bad either.11 -
Tutanota (encrypted mail service) is releasing a new android app soon which won’t be using GCM anymore so that the app won’t be the reason a phone connects to anything google anymore and it’ll be on F-Droid soon!
Fuck yeah, Turanota, I fucking love you ❤️11 -
I've been swapping through a couple of ROM's recently for my Nexus 6P but I don't really like any of them a whole lot.. so I've been thinking to build my own from source. However I'd also like to discard Google while I'm at it, and instead go with F-droid, DuckDuckGo, and AOSP keyboard. The problem is that I currently don't see any viable alternatives to the following: Google Assistant, Google Play Services (particularly in-app purchases like those for devRant), Google Maps and Google Calendar. Which alternatives would you recommend, and which are you perhaps using yourself as alternatives? Thanks!10

Why has "privacy minded" people fallen for the illusion that Signal is good?
- It is centralized, which means you can't have control
- It uses google play services
- Using third party servers to send gifs
- The apk has flaws
- There is a reason F-Droid dont want it in its repo
I really can't wrap my head around why "privacy minded" people would embrace it.22 -
Is anyone here living Google free?
I've switched to using DuckDuckGo and ProtonMail for a while now, but I still find YouTube to be unreplaceable.
And also all the Google stuff on Android, like the play store and other integrations.
I know there's F-Droid and ROMs I might be able to install that wouldn't use any google service; just curious if some have done this successfully.21 -
Thank you devRant for introducing me to Pi-Hole and F-Droid. My life being my family's "sysadmin" has become so much easier after those two discovery.1

Definitely the first Android app I decided to fork.
It was an open source OTP authenticator which hadn't been actively developed for 2 years at that point. At first I only did some small fixes and minor visual improvements but by now it's evolved into its own project with a lot of contributores and users on both Google Play and F-Droid.
When I started I had no knowledge of Java or Android development what so ever. So it basically forced me to learn lots of new stuff, especially once issues started to come in. By now I learned so much on this project that I'm thinking about re-writing the whole thing from scratch because I question some of the design choices from the original app I forked...

Tody I finally decided to go Google free in my device. Now I have 0 Google services in my phone and so far I'm loving it.
All apks can be found on apkmirror and f-droid but devRant is not available on any of those platforms so I have to restore my previous backed up apk from playstore.
Yeah and I'm not on any socialmedia whatsoever like FaceCrap and InstaHeadache. Feels like my phone would last for 2 days on single charge.2 -
F-Droid can't even download apps properly. It's fucking 2019 and you haven't figured out how to download files in background?! What are you, F-Droid devs, braindead?5

well it wasn't "cutting-edge" but it was pretty ugly, yet good
it was called Instagrabber, it's still on GitLab, but it's archived
it was first open source project of mine which gained publicity of over 500 people, but in the end i let down lots of people by discontinuing it
if someone's interested in that stupid cringe project, search "Instagrabber source" or "Instagrabber Awais" and first GitLab or F-DROID link would be it. 😂😂🤦🏻♂️2 -
Some guy posted an issue on my repo asking about my license and whether he could add my app to F-Droid, does anyone have an experience with that?4

What is everyone's opinion on F-Droid? Just discovered it (though the site seems to be down at the time of writing this) and I want to see if it's as good as it sounds.2
