This is my first IoT project. It's pretty simple, but I've been very happy with the results thus far.
About this time last year, someone got into our garage and rifled through my wife's car.
I have a camera in my garage, and a Phillips Hue motion detector. Using the Hue's excellent API, I have a perl script that checks for motion every couple of seconds, and starts capturing from the camera via RTSP if it does. That video is then staged, ready to be uploaded to a digital ocean droplet if I click on a link in the mailgun-powered email that's then sent to me and my wife, along with a preview GIF of the video, created through the same ffmpeg process that pulled the capture from the camera.
Here you can see me getting home from work.20 -
Yeah sure Phillips, Lets not support android 7. Because when you make an electronic device controlled by an app that helps people with chronic pain. I'm sure those people would like to spent their afternoon finding out how to downgrade android just to keep using it.
The device is called pulserelief and when its working its great :) but when you're in pain you really are NOT IN THE MOOD TO DOWNGRADE YOUR ANDROID VERSION. -
I thought I'd opened every shitty type of Chinese-grade electronics by now. Glued in shit, ultrasonically welded shit, potted shit. And occasionally the now very rare piece of electronics that has actual screws.
Until now. Remington, apparently yet another company filled with certified enganeers. My razor is from them, and I wanted to open it up to see why the lithium cell inside was failing, and to replace it with a bigger one. 2 screws in the back of the unit, Phillips head. But holy fuck, those things sat in there more tightly than the glory hole of the Asian girl that probably assembled this thing. Externalizing our own features in our craft? Check!
Pretty hard to remove them but that's fine. But the unit didn't open up, and there seems to be no screws left. I guess that they leveled up their level of certified enganeering and actually used both screws and ultrasonic welding. Because why wouldn't you, right?!

It's actually safer to use a flat head screwdriver bit to screw and unscrew Phillips head screws than the screwdriver bit that's actually designed for it.. because reasons.
Fuck Phillips heads, they're fucking junk. They're quite a decent match for the shit that consumer electronics often is though... But for anything halfway fucking worth it, why don't we use something like Torx or tri-wing already?! Or rather, anything that isn't Phillips or Pozidriv. Anything that doesn't fuck right off when you slightly overtorque it (without stripping the threads) or want to unscrew it.16 -
I use my PC mainly for gaming, Anime and home stuff.
Pc is a big tower under the desk btw.
Main monitor is a 34", 1440p, 60hz from LG (it's rather old). Second one is a 29", 1080p monitor from Phillips which I also could rotate. I really have no idea what I should use it for and I never really put it on anyway.
I could do more or less professional recording for Twitch or whatever but I'm to lazy and no pro, so I only use it for some multiplayer game sessions.
Questions or ideas how to optimise my setup are welcome.
Cable management is a mess btw. -

tl;dr
You know that feeling when you have your headphones on and somebody is talking to you and then your stomach starts to hurt, because you don't want to put down your headphones because the music is great and your headphones plays it really good?
The post
I cannot code without headphones on. I'm currently on a longterm journey to find the best over-the-head budget headphones for coding, just out of curiosity, I started with cheap Phillips headphones for a couple of euros (9 or 10 i don't rem.), I would say they are usable, for a casual user, but far-far from the best
Then i purchased a Sennheiser HD451 for like 3x the price of the Phillips, really good. I use them in work and wanted to go on with the comparison so i bought a ATH m30x for home, and for gods sake, they are soo fucking good, way better what i would expect from a budget headphone, it cost twice the price of the Sennheiser.
Whats your "daily driver"? What would you suggest to try next?
note: before these I was using earbuds which came with my cellphones and 2.1 systems5 -

I enjoy reading the arcane language of devs, although I haven't a fucking clue what you're talking about. It's the instinctive rise and fall of emotion that I find gripping.
There's one thing I may be better at than most of you; since 1967's first episode of "Time Tunnel," I have been enamoured of RMS Titanic. So, two things. Today is the birthday of Jack Phillips, the senior wireless operator who lost his life the night of the sinking. There's a memorial garden in his birthplace, Godalming, Surrey, UK. The second is my recent immersion in enhancing images. I'm attaching a work in progress of RMS Titanic sailing past the Isle of Wight on her maiden voyage. Stay dry lol.4 -

Does anyone uses an Echo Dot for any usefull task? I currently use it only for Phillips HUE because I can't think of any other usecase 🤔1

When do you use parameters in your Dto/ViewModel constructors?
I'm trying to explain to a senior developer, that we don't need to have all parameters for all properties,
we only need it to set default/private fields.3 -
What alternative do you use for EF Migrations?
We are in current stage that it's slowing our build time for 30 seconds, and each month we need to clean them and do the same for the whole pipeline (dev, qa, prod)...
It's way uncomfortable to work with it since we have stored procedures and ef doesn't track them...
What alternative did you chose to use?1
