Well, it wasn't fun, but I switched jobs this month. And sadly, it was mostly because my old company started building custom applications for our larger customers. Now, normally that wouldn't be too bad (other than the fact that it distracts us form working on our main product...) but... it was decided that we would use the back end of our user-generated forms module as the data storage layer. Someone outside of my department thought it would be a great idea, and my boss kinda just rolled over without a fight because he always just figures he can "make it work" if he works hard enough...

You shoulda seen the database and SQL code...

Because of that decision, everything took at least 3x as long to write and there was always the looming possibility that the user could change the schema on a whim and break the app.

I think the reasoning behind it was to try and keep the customers tied to the aging flagship product (with a pricy subscription model), but IMO, it was not with it. Our efforts could've had much greater impact somewhere else. Nobody seemed to care what I thought about it though...

I had to start over as a front-end dev, but I'm trying to look on the bright side and seeing it as an opportunity to sharpen my skills in that area. I'm already learning a lot. And although it's a little scary at times, it's also so refreshing to work at a place where I know I'm not the smartest guy in the room.

Uni graduates: Remember when we had to bang our heads against the wall a million times to finally earn our degree!

Non uni graduates: Remember when you had to go through million documentations, write lots of code to sharpen your skills?

Ya both categories above can go fuck them selves, these days follow a tutorial or buy a 10 min videos to be the next big thing in any field ...

Just wanted to share about what just happened today.

So I graduated with a CS degree 2 years in EU and since then worked in two companies for a year in each of them, where I was paid 18k EUR gross salary in both of my jobs.

Just today I accepted an offer in Sweden for 48K eur/year and they will help be with relocation!

I am extremely happy and starting my new position in 6 weeks. Going to exercise, try to loose some weight and get better clothes, just to look sharp! Also going to sharpen up my skills as well as have 2 weeks holiday before I start.

Morever I will maintain my current job as a contractor where they will pay me 27EUR/hour so every month I will get 50-100 hours of extra work. I just hope that I will be able to balance main job+contractor job+side projects. I know it wont be easy but I wont be in a relationship so it should be manageable!

Today I found github student developer pack thing. It was the golden chance to sharpen my git skills at least I thought so.. 2 hours tried to figure out how does "merge" works in gitkraken and now I'm depressed..

I've been developing Android apps since about 2 years. I learned completely on my own by watching videos and referring websites. Till now I haven't worked on any Big or complex app but now I want sharpen my skills in Android app development,so if anybody needs any sort of Android work to be done I'll be happy to help and there by sharpen my skills..

Now I know why my skills got rusty, and am not able to code as I used to be 😭😭😢

So, I just downloaded Enki, and I love it. It is like the duoLingo of coding. Most other platforms don't hold you to a regimen, but Enki does. My favorite is the "Does it work in IE8" game! I really hope to sharpen my skills with this app.

Don't be discouraged by rejection. If you get rejected from a company it doesn't necessarily mean you're not good enough for them, they might just be looking for a different type of developer, different type of personality, etc. Or they might even have misjudged you based on the 30 seconds they gave you. Of course, you need to sharpen your skills, but decouple that from reactions from companies to you.

I hate when I got a workshop to sharpen my skills and my boss wants me to do nothing but sit on a chair instead of learning... taking me out of the workshop

Since I lack proficiency in Object Oriented Analysis and Design and Datastructures and Algorithms and this has caused me many problems at work, I must review these.
You'd think you don't need to know the 'dry theoretical matter' as they say, oh but you do.. I found out first hand at one of my tougher programming jobs where you have to create everything manually.

And now, looking at my entire first and second year of university courses regarding this matter.. the amount I have to study is enormous. Datastructures and algorithms alone: 1000+ page book + 500+ slides.. and that's only fresh man year! Yep.
I could say there's a way around it but.. I don't really think there is. If I keep just knowing the basic programming concepts, I won't get far. I need to dive deeper.

Until I master this material, it will keep haunting me in programming jobs.
