Inappropriate experience at work? Here is another one:

The IS department manager 'John' bought a drone (when they first started getting popular, paid over $400 for it), flew it around the office, which was kinda fun, then he took it outside and started peeking in (and recording video) various VPs offices.

Needless to say, that behavior wasn't popular because several/most have their back to the window and never saw the drone and the drone was close enough to see/record their monitors (which John did). No one was doing anything wrong (no porn, no secret company plans, etc), but they were rightfully upset.

Later that day he decided to find out how high he could go and because of the technology at the time, it lost signal or battery power, fell from the sky, and before he could gain control, it crashed (styrofoam wings shattered). Can't say I felt sorry for him.

15 hour days, build is broken, laptop crashed and I ragequit by nearly throwing it out the Window.
Time to go Home.

GAH!!! I was programming and this happened!!!

The worst technology i had to deal with was probably a piece of hardware. It was a mini-pc combined with sensors and digital IOs and thus, it should have been able to do process control all by itself.

At that time, there was hardware that did that, but this one had an intel cpu, windows embedded and some powerful libraries pre-installed.

Sounds good, didn't work. The thing was so unstable and buggy and crashed on everything. The sensor part had lots of parameters and the right order was trial and error, documentation didn't match behavior, fixes promised but never delivered.

Lucky for us: it was just a demokit, no real project.

I still remember it with a smile. We got in contact to that company at a trade fair and they had most impressive booth. I also remember their companies image movie from their homepage with developers in dark labs with holographic monitors and the boss in his shiny bright office as he looked out of the window and quoted a famous german author.

Hilarious and sad. :-)

So a question.

I remember a news article recently urging all people to use python and rust and the like because of memory safety.....

somewhere way back whenever this bs was.

so a few times now I had chatgpt generate me a status window script because it was a one use thing just so I could see how far along a near 500 gb download was to finished.

and it repeatedly caused my machine to freeze from an unknown source of memory leakage as it gradually built up a ridiculous amount of overhead at a rate much faster than it should jhave from the few references and bits of scalar data that it was accumulating.

I know its means something else...

but its kind of funny just the same :P
my system crashed from what is supposed to be a managed language right ? exceptions and stack traces etc ?
