Had a job interview 3 weeks ago, all went very well.

They asked me to do a dev task, I did it and delivered it the same day (simple task really)

Got no confirmation of receipt and eventually chased a week later and they confirmed they had it and would be in touch by that weekend. Another week beyond that passed and still nothing.

If the interview hadn’t gone as well I’d not be bothered but why the fuck do companies go as far as asking you to do a dev task to not communicate with you after that.

    I guess it's a common trend among companies to simply not respond to job applications (or to whatever mail for that matter). In the last 2 years I've sent out 24 applications, 29.2% of which did not get a response at all, even after follow-up mails.
    Is it lack of professionalism or poor internal processes, I don't know, but I sure wouldn't work in companies like that anyway. If they can't handle basic communication, it likely reflects deeper issues

    Why do you want a job? I want to retire

    @bedawang yes the lack of contact after application is frustrating. This one really got to me and pissed me off though as did an interview and technical test.

    @antigermgerm having barely worked in 4 months, it’s safe to say I’d be happy to retire. Unfortunately 15 years of bad financial decisions and a child mean that I need to find a job 😬

    @iiii fuck money. I want to live in the wood in a cardbox, make fire, blow dick for crack. The real life.

    Retirement age raised to 98. Pensions paid in expired coupons. Work till death—then taxed for dying.

    @bedawang thus the weedfarm

    @antigermgerm fair nuff. I'd like something like that as well. Just a quiet place somewhere where no one is around

    @iiii unfortunately every inch of quiet has been paved

    I’ve gotten some communication (only “thanks for applying” and rejection letters) from ~15% of the places I’ve applied to.

    Is this level of ghosting the new normal?

    @bedawang My experience so far:

    71 job applications:

    - 45 no answer or generic response in less than 1h

    - 5 denied before first interview

    - 21 go to first interview (4 offers, 1 lied about what they promised vs contract, 1 ghosted when sending a counter offer, I ghosted 1 for shit offer, accepted last one)

    I think I was relatively lucky still

    I have 2 theories:

    1. By having fake open job postings, they want to present themselves as a growing company in the public. They either don't hire at all or wait until they find the egglaying, milk-producing, woolgrowing ppigbull who can do the work of a whole department for the cost of one person.

    2. The challenges are real problems they cant solve so they get free labor by appliying SWE to solve them. I had such a case where I had to implement a UML diagram in Java and calculate some cost with tax policies and yadayada. Wrote some unit-tests and showed it to the interviewer. He input a very specific number and sighed with disappointment when the result was -0.00. Then proceeded to cut everything short and end the interview prematurely.

    @chatgpt Prompt: "Write a scathing follow-up email to HR for ignoring my job application for [job title], sent [X weeks] ago. The tone should be harsh, sarcastic, and subtly insulting, yet still grammatically correct and readable as a 'professional' email. Include jabs at generic HR behavior, empty corporate slogans, and the hypocrisy of companies that preach communication and respect but can’t be bothered to respond. End with a biting remark that implies the company’s silence was a lucky warning."

    @bedawang nah, people occupy only a small part of land and are quite densely packed

    There are thousands of reasons. Be patient. They'll be in touch.

    I *am* retired. It's very underrated.

    @bols59 Patience is tough when you have no work or money and a family but yes - doing my best!

    @Root yeah I'm at about 15% response rate for applications but incredibly low interview rate.
