It does make sense. "Senior" is just a job title, not a military grade or something. Hell I become senior by adding "senior" on my CV and nobody ever told me anything
  • 3
yup. Nobody knows what senior means anyway. Declare yourself as whatever you want for the pay that you want to have and the work that you want to do.

@Lensflare yeah on LinkedIn i'm the CTO of my own company.

I receive offers to become director at McKinsley lmao

    @CaptainRant I'm a senior and I don’t ๐Ÿ˜‚

@Lensflare Okay, well, according to a Senior I knew that told me:

    - can independently build a product from scratch and fix problems without assistance

    - can lead a team

    - can argue about architectural decisions and make informed choices on these

    - has relevant mastery in a number of popular programming languages/technologies

    - can even act as a Principal

    - is comfortable handling (very) complex problems

@CaptainRant yeah I know all of that. I’ve been told something similar.

But nobody can measure or verify that. I mean not really.

An absolute noob can fake all of that and be called a senior.

And an absolute pro can fail at proving that they can do all of that and they will be denied the title of senior.

I gave interview today. I went well. I was in the realm of “happy”.

HR says “You have rated average mid.”

I’m like, is that good? Is that bad? Why does Mid sound better than average?

HR says “We are checking with hiring manager what level of seniority is exactly needed.”

Well, I have 5 years so mid level is fine. I’ll take it. Pls hire me.

nobody takes any of that stuff seriously

they only pretend to because they wanna morally break you down

    * disclaimer: the PTSD inside my mind may not apply to the world

@jestdotty That's gonna suck for the Seniors that are functioning as Principals but not getting pay raise for it...
