Last year the rewrite of an ancient system (VB6/mainframe COBOL) was started. Instead of moving to modern architecture management decided to rewrite the app's functionality into our last gen WinForms client/server arch. I set up a meeting to present alternatives and plead for some level of modernization. After presenting and asking management to plan for five to ten years in the future instead of just this year's budget my director said, "In five to ten years I'll be retired on a beach in Tahiti and this will be your problem to solve." It was the last straw and I left the company shortly after. Last week I found out the director was force retired out of the company. I sent her a congratulations slip and a cocktail umbrella with "Tahiti" written on it.

Love my new job but fuck they are way behind in any kind of modernization.

Just saw a demo over zoom where someone was showing the team how to change the margin on an error page.

They literally changed the HTML directly in prod using the VIM. So first of all no web modernation because there was no build, no deployment, not git, no pipeline - NOTHING!

This project went from 40 people to around 200 in 6 mos. You can't have all these people in prod just making fucking changes.

If this job did not pay 110k a year I would bail.

What kind of sensetive idiots have we become that we are wasting productive time? Not that we could be cracking quantum theory problems in that time, but still, seriously!

What's next? Update the dictionary and remove all words ?

And don't comment that I'm insensitive to atrocities. I understand atrocities over race/gender (I come from a brown country, face racism everyday) but how does spending time on updating code bases help?

PHP gurus / masochists.

I've been using Symfony components for new, isolated features in a legacy php application for awhile now. the time has come to integrate using the kernel, and routing for new endpoints while existing endpoints use the existing apache means of loading pages.

It's not my first rodeo doing this, but I'd appreciate any wisdom/resources/patterns you followed for anyone who's had to do the same.

My clients don't have the means to do hire the appropriate ammount of devs to do a proper port, so this is a long path towards modernization by ceasing to bolt on features to existing code and instead, when working on something, updating it to the new design pattern and then extending that, with a spec, documentation and code coverage.

Gone in an instant was the shimmering gleem of hope that I'd get to work on modernization of our current code base. Back to last fucking century I guess.

Should I infastructure as code or should I not? The god damn difficulty of approaching a cloud infra modernization project… so much to potentially do, don’t even know where to start and what is or isn’t relevant in the end… gaah
