--- UK Mobile carrier O2's data network vanishes like a fart in the wind ---
One of the largest mobile carriers in the UK; O2 has been having all manner of weird and wonderful problems this morning as bleary eyed susbcribers awoke to find their data services unavailable. What makes this particular outage interesting (more so than the annoyingly frequent wobblers some mobile masts have) is that the majority of the UK seems to be affected.
To further compound the hilarity/disaster (depending on which side of the fence you're on), Many smaller independent carriers such as GiffGaff and Tesco Mobile piggy-back off O2's network, meaning they're up the stinky creek without a paddle as well. Formal advice from the gaseous carrier is to reboot your device frequently to force a reconnect attempt, Which we're absolutely sure won't cause any issues at all with millions of devices screaming at the same network when it comes back up.
Issue reports began flooding DownDetector at around 5am (GMT), With PR minions formally acknowledging the issue 2 hours later at 7am (GMT) via the most official channel available - Twitter. After a few recent updates via the grapevine (companies involved seems to be keeping their heads down at the minute) Ericsson has been fingered for pushing out a wonky software update but there's been no official confirmation of this, so pitchforks away please folks.
If you're in need of a giggle while you wait for your 4G goodness to return, You can always hop on an open WiFi network and read the tales of distress the data-less masses are screaming into the void.4 -
I watched this video today about the new Xbox adaptive controllers. I had heard about it before, but never knew how capable or functional it actually was.
And watching that video made me realise exactly how much the tech we build , and support helps many people live the lives they wanted.
All the rants about languages , editors , frameworks aside , things like this were built with an idea and an inclusive intension to help. And that's exactly what we all are here for :)
do check the video out it made my day and I'm sure it will make yours too ..

Ok now let's get our pitchforks back and go hunt some vim users down.

Usual python code problems coming from someone who has been coding in Javascript and PHP (<--no pitchforks please). It's been months already but old habits still keep on coming back
- adding a semi-colon
- mixing spaces with tabs
- using a lowercase boolean
- adding an open brace when declaring a function
- forgetting the colon ( ;'s brother) -
I am experiencing deju vu:
https://reddit.com/r/csharp/...
dude: Why doesn't C# do this dynamic "like" thing?
community: How dare you like something from another language?! Don't you know C# is strongly type?! Dynamic is a curse on your children! <gets out torches and pitchforks>
random dude: Why don't you use <this method> to do this?
dude: Thanks "random dude", this does what I was looking for with a bit different syntax than I was expecting.
lol
Programmers are awesome!9 -
So, the internet is over. Just in case you didn’t notice. If you post a link to anything that involves you: an article, a podcast, a thing you built, a video you made - then mods and admins and trolls get their pitchforks and ban you or roast you or delete you.
This is not the way.
Not only are the walled gardens of apple, Twitter, Facebook/Instagram, breaking the web into little areas - and marketing is buying your time - but we’re doing it to ourselves too.
I can’t post a video about some of my favorite programming books in
/learnprogramming or I’m immediately banned!? Every link that takes people away from your ad dollars is ‘spam?’ Without any useful discourse and content - then why would anyone be there in the first place.
One time I posted a link HERE about how people could get CSS help in the CSS discord and I got fire-stormed for self-promotion. Really? Hundreds of hours helping people learn programming - for free... is my self promotion? Is everyone so insecure that they can’t allow anyone else to talk about their work? It’s super scary.
This is how you control people. This is Nazi shit. It’s a slippery Slope. Watch out.
And whatever you do... don’t share links to your things. That is NOT what the internet was made for.4 -
Another cardinal sin: i use cortana. And she is useful. Get the pitchforks and torches you can send me to hell i have to maintain legacy php applications im acustomed to it.6

Expecting Youtube to provide ad-less and free version is either naivete or sense of entitlement. Regardless, you are entitled to nothing.
I am not talking about ad-block users, so lower down your pitchforks. As long as many more people watch with ads, adblock will not hurt anyone that mich.3 -
So, a while ago the Netherlands had to pay a fee of ten million for not reaching their climate goals (that are unreachable by definition i've read somewhere). Who held them responsible? Greenpeace. Who the fuck does Greenpeace think who they are? But it seems that anyone can sue the government for not doing what they say. Ok, fine. It seems that Greenpeace had the right. But now, that fee, where does that go? I mean, not to Greenpeace I hope, else i will sue the fuck about them too. Ok, so maybe some deposit regarding the climate from government itself? No idea, there's literally no journalist that asked. I've searched everywhere, where does the ten million go? Nothing. And many people feel informed by reading the news. Idiots. I don't follow news, but when I do, there's alway something wrong. I really don't know why the news is still so big, why journalists still have a job. ItS ParT oF DemoCraCy HaviNg JouRnaListS Who vaLIdaTe ThE GoveRNmeNt. Sure.
I mean.. It's literally OUR money they're wasting like this. Source of anger: I had to pay smth. And i was like, you guys already spent my money on bullshit.rant pitchforks informed fire all journalists stupid news all of them lawsuit greenpeace the netherlands4
