Any long time TES fans here? There is a lot of discussion in Reddit about how older TES games seemed to have a larger variety of game mechanics that have been stripped on newer game releases. People getting really upset when saying Skyrim is a dumbed down Oblivion and Oblivion is a dumbed down Morrowind and Morrowind it a dumbed downed Daggerfall.
I didn't notice this as much when going from Morrowind to Oblivion. I never did play Daggerfall. But I did notice it quite a bit when going from Oblivion to Skyrim. It felt like arcadification and making it simpler for console players. Which is a reason I play modded to get more features back.
So I put it succinctly: Skyrim was made less sophisticated to appeal to larger less sophisticated audience.
I currently prefer playing Skyrim because of the large modding community adding new content, the amazing modded graphics, and the large amount of mods adding features from previous games. But I also realized something about myself when playing Skyrim. Part of the reason for its appeal is that the base game is less RPG like in the traditional sense. It is more visceral and hand on, gritty even. This appeals to my unga bunga side. While still giving me the RPG details I like out of games. On the flip side I play modded Minecraft because it is technical and requires thinking.
So for me: unga bunga game is Skyrim, technical game is Minecraft.
Did I go to far trying to describe the arcadification of Bethesda games?6
