My senior is like that, though I don't know what the source of his stress is (job is stressful but not to the point of eating oneself to death).
His house is 20 min walk from the office and he prefers to drive a car to get there 3x a week 🤷🏻♀️ -
@CoreFusionX
That could be one of the problem, but certainly not the main one.
This issue also happens in a lot of other non-tech depts, where people there are eager to get into management to get bigger check. Yet they always prioritize external candidates. -
Why *daily* stand up meeting though?
Unless your team is in devops/IT that's time sensitive (like managing online services), I don't see a point. As a developer, I hate it, I will not have much progress from yesterday to report.
Ideally once a week is enough, I can still tolerate twice a week, but daily? Meh..🤷🏻♀️ -
Me.
Combine that with an annoying and arrogant senior.
I am waiting if they are gonna give me enough raise this year to deal with all these BS.
If not, then I am out of here -
Same, I skip the whole bunch of paragraphs and only focus on the code.
If I don't understand the code, then I search the explanation in the paragraphs.
I know this is not a good practice... ☹
I also don't know if it's because of my autism that I am bad at R/W texts but very good with symbol/number -
-3h
because I often finish my work earlier, and spend the rest of the day doom-scrolling social media. -
Am I the only one here who prefer to work in small team of 3 people than a team with 40 people?
🤔 -
A unicorn is a 500 lines of bash script that works on the first try

@IHateFrameworks
Any tips how to "threatening to leave"?
Did you just usually show them offers from other companies? -
This is why I no longer join quarterly town hall.
Whatever good news they have may not trickle down to the employees. -
Nope, half a week (2-3 days) in the office.
Also, you 'll be dealing with lots of bureaucracies and more non-tech people than your fellow engineers.
I will give this job one more year, then I am out. -
@netikras
I agree, but comparing making a CRUD app with life-saving work is over the top.
I don't have that sense of grandiose, or maybe I am just too much of a realist/pessimist.
There are some of us who truly do meaningful work for the society, but that's a minority. -
I'm in a similar situation though I don't feel as hopeless as you.
What @NeatNerdPrime said is correct. Just stop caring. No need to fuss too much about something you can't change. Focus on what you can change. You said you have 1 year left. It's not that long. Then what's next? A new job, hopefully better? -
Wait until you graduate and start working, you'll get even more disappointed.
Most jobs are just glorified CRUD, if you're lucky you can get a bit creative with excel/pdf/powerpoint. The amount of corporate BS you'll have to deal though is in another level..
Don't get too attached with your idealism. -
@SidTheITGuy
Faking illness every weekend? Yeah ...
I already rejected all his invites with various creative reasons. 😅 -
@ostream
Anyone who know me more than 1 weeks, know that I have bad social anxiety.
Don't know why he seems oblivious to that. -
How old are you?
How many years have you worked?
For reference, I plan to retire/semi-retire at 45. -
@ostream
It's in a high demand, more or less like SWE.
I think the interview is easier as well because hey no leetcode needed here!
But now I understand why most devs don't want to transfer to devops. It's just not challenging enough. -
@jestdotty
Most of my day is filled with meetings and talking to people. :/
I cherish the time I work from home, at least the distraction will lessen -
@ostream
Can't say if it's really good, I do get a pay bump when they offered the transfer though. It's not a lot, but my main motivation at that time was to be able to learn new stacks if I agreed.
How naive, the things I learn so far is how to make fancier CI pipeline. :/ -
I just recently delve into bash script again.
My senior told me to use specific error code :
- case A : exit 10
- case B : exit 20
and so on.
So I can't use globally set -e in this case -
@coldfire
Antora.
I have also asked something about a lib specific feature once during my uni days for another open source lib. The maintainers there were also nice, answering my questions.
Of course not all maintainers are like this, but so far my experience dealing with them are pretty good. -
@lorentz
Dependencies... it's always the dependencies 🤷♀️ -
Nope I don't commute as my place is near the office.
I thought that 1-2h commute one way is fine if only occasionally. But 4-5h?! Damn, maybe you do need to move.
Either that, or try to find a new job. Pretty sure you won't be the only one in your company quitting over this decision -
We have a policy of minimum 40% attendance in the office since the pandemic but most people don't follow it. So far, I haven't heard anyone getting a warning because of it. As long as you sometimes pop up in the office, it's fine.
Do you really have to move? Is occasionally long commute not possible? -
@dissolvedgirl
WTH... The level of micromanaging is 🤷♀️
I thought that our company's monitoring practice is bad enough. For sure yours is the winner here. -
@We3D
My condolences...
Your gf's argument sounds like my mom and my ex-bf (one of the reasons he's an ex). -
- Mood can change
- Your money status can change
- Your job status can change
- You can always get a new girlfriend
But you can't return a baby if you don't like it. -
Yep, I am the junior billed as mid level engineer to the client.
They do this by paying me junior salary when I end up doing mid-level engineer work. -
Similar story...
They gathered us one day to discuss about annual employee satisfaction survey
In the meeting, my manager told us that we're going to discuss every point in the survey EXCEPT salary.
Damn, I only joined that meeting to see what they're going to do about our salary. For sure, I will not join the same meeting next year
