I. FUCKING. HATE. MOBILE. DEVELOPMENT.
I already manage the data, devops, infra, and most of the backend dev.
We had a mobile guy. He was great. I never had to think about it and kept moving quickly on my work. #SpecializationOfLaborFTW
He left. Why? Because they wouldn't give him a small raise despite being one of the best mobile engineers in the firm. WTF.
I made the mistake of picking up just enough slack on this workflow in the interim such that I'm, apparently, the fucking god-damned release manager, fixer of pipelines, fixer of build configs, fixer of anything where someone just needs to RTFM for a half-hour to not fucking break things.
Now, 8 months later...and, apparently, Fortune 500 companies are too fucking god-damned cheap to pay for someone who actually knows WTF they're doing for a very reasonable thing to have at least one dedicated set of eyes for.
I never wanted to be a mobile dev.
I never will want to be a mobile dev.
And I certainly don't want to manage your HALF-FACE-FUCKED detached expo configs.
There's a reason I never intentionally involved myself in mobile. All the way down, it's just shitty cross-compilation, transpilation, dependency-hell, brittle-as-fuck build processes so we can foot-gun and mouth-gun react-native and expo and babel and whatever the fuck else cargo-culted horseshit into the wild.
And why? What's the actual fucking root cause? The biggest white elephant that ever fucking elephant-ed? It's because Apple and Google decided to never collaborate on a truly-native cross-platform SDK--where engineers could write native code that compiles to native binaries that's simply write-once, run-everywhere. They know they could have done that, and they didn't. So what'd they get back? Expo--a too-cleverly-designed backdoor/hack--more-or-less a way to circumvent the sane release process software has usually followed: code -> executable -> deploy. Or code -> deploy (for interpreted langs). Expo's like "keep your same executable, we're just gonna to do updates by injecting new code into it whenever we want". Didn't we learn anything with web? Shit gets messy real quick? Not to mention: HEY EXPO, WE WERE ALREADY BUILDING NATIVE APPS, YOU SHORT-SIGHTED FUCKS. THANKS FOR LURING OUR CTOs INTO FORCING EXPO DOWN OUR THROATS W/ THE IMPLICIT (BUT INCORRECT) TOO-GOOD-TO-BE-TRUE PROMISE THAT WE CAN HAVE WRITE-ONCE, RUN-ANYWHERE WITHOUT ANY BUY-IN OR COOPERATION FROM THE ACTUAL TARGET PLATFORMS.
And, we just, like, accept this? We all know it's garbage engineering. The principles we learned in the classroom aren't just academic abstractions--they actually yield real-world results--and eschewing them yields real-world failures. Expo is tightly-coupled to high-heaven, with leaky abstractions six-ways-to-christmas, chock-full of foot-guns, and fails the most basic test of quality: does it, "just work?"
Expo is fucking shameful and it should fucking die. Its promises are too bold, its land-mines too many, its future-proof-ness is alway, always, always questionable as fuck and a risk to every project that uses it.
You want a rant? This is my fucking venue, 'tis not? Well, then this is a piss and vinegar rant straight from my blood-red, beating fucking heart:
EXPO FUCKING SUCKS. AND IF YOU'RE A FAN, YOU FUCKING SUCK TOO.27 -
Attend all the meetings, they said. They're super important, they said. You'll get more code done if we hyper-report on progress they said. The bugs are piling up and we need to have even more meetings, they said.
STOP SAYING THINGS AT ME AND LET ME FUCKING CODE YOU INSUFFERABLE CUNTS.1 -
TLDR: There's some days where the Gods of IT are not with you. Just lost a whole day of work.
So this morning, we (me and my team) big performance issues with our web app. Lot's of requests time out, big latency, etc
Try to ssh to VPS, latency of 10 seconds between user input and output.
Usual checks: RAM ok, Proc ok, hard drive ok, reboot server (20 minutes), update/upgrade
We decide to call OVH. After 15 minutes call, we try to reboot in rescue mode. Reboot fails at 60% + everything freezes.
After an hour, OVH opens an incident ticket on +200 vps instances (including mine) everything is down during +1h
Finally everything is okay ! Even had time to migrate my new database schema.
Still, quick heavy on the mind but feels good to go home with everything working out correctly -
Got locked out of my DigitalOcean account, absolutly hate OVH vps's, and currently relying on free credit with Google Cloud Services.
Anyone have better ideas? 😂25 -
I need a bit of advice, I'm looking to rent a dedicated server for dev and test small projects and maybe host a site in the future but mainly a box I can access from everywhere and constantly online
I checked out ovh and server4you but I wanted real experience from a community I can trust, any recommendations?9 -
It's only August but I already know what I'll be thankful for come Thanksgiving:
1. Our next president.
2. Integration tests.1 -
I should not have my master control plane placed at OVH.

I just knew about netlify
I paid so much less (10$ first year and 15$ second year) instead of 45$/year with OVH for a domain.
Is there any cons with Netifly ?14 -
Why are you paying me to architect your new stack if you're just going to mandate that I use Guice and Jersey "because that's what you're using already"? I'm sorry. You're wrong. Spring Boot is not a "dying technology". I'm not going to build you a servlet from scratch. Get fukt.1

Damn you OVH... You and your goddamn deals again... Now I ended up buying 2 domains for a project again. We all know I'll leave the domain in my cloudflare "keychain" without using it until it expires, because I'll find a fancier and more fun project 😅
I'm at 12 domains right now... I think I might be addicted 🤔
Btw, theres a sick deal going on over at OVH, .com is only 1,20€... Better get your project domain which you'll probably never use again now 😂4 -
Fuck companies that want you to build new systems that are a superset of what they already have when they can't even tell you what they have now. Fuck you with your bullshit, nonsensical, self-contradicting, third-assed diagrams--some half-UML, half-clip-art, half-pie-chart drivel. If you're the CTO of a company and you want me to think long and hard about rebuilding your distributed systems, you can think long and hard about expressing what you already have. And NO: a verbal explanation pow-pow WebEx over your DSL connection with your protege that mumbles worse than an Atlantan rapper doesn't count as fucking "knowledge transfer" of your fucking architecture, FOR FUCKS SAKE.

Fucking OVH had an electrical issue AGAIN!!! it's for second time in the last 5 month. had to reinstall the OS because kernel is fucked. thank god i backed up my data5
-
So I've been sitting on the phone with OVH for the last hour because their VPS refuses to let me change my password and come to find out they don't really know why either. Fml.

That feeling when the cluster your ovh vps runs on goes down the exact moment your application is supposed to go live, and everyone is blaming you :|3

Has anyone had any experience with OVH? Are they as good of a hosting provider as five year old forum posts say they are? Specifically looking at their VPS Cloud RAM2
-
MySQL Innodb easily get crashed, bullshit, I just restarted my server now all databases get corrupted. F*ck you OVH3

Hello everyone,
I wanted to ask for advice about hosting providers. Specifically looking for vps servers.
I'm currently using OVH, but I got some recommendations that would give me a lot more for the price.
The recommendations I got were Contabo, Hetzner and Netcup
Maybe some of you have experience with those Providers and can recommend one, or maybe even some not on that list.
Thanks for taking your time to read6 -
What do you think is the best software for an e-mail server running on Ubuntu 16.04 (Gotta use Ubuntu for a few different reasons). Haven’t been able to find a good solution for me to use. Needs to be able to run a few different email domains, roughly 5 domains.
Hell, any suggestions on a VPS host? I’ve been thinking of OVH. (Best bang for the buck so far that I’ve found)8 -
I need some help with parking a domain in ovh.com webhosting. It's a real pain in the ass so any input is strongly appreciated. I kinda figured out what todo already, but still need some clarification.
Normally after buying a webhosting all I would need to do is login to my domain registrar's website and in the control panel just change nameservers to webhosting nameservers and that's all. Webhosting provider would take care of the rest (subdomain creation, e-mail creation and etc.) But because OVH are assholes, they support this type of domain parking only for domains registered at OVH.
For external domains, procedure is as follows:
For the configuration to function, you will need to make the following adjustments with the current provider:
Insert a TXT record for the domain ovhcontrol.mydomain.com with the value jwyPolzgrZyIShzaQItqw
Point the A record of your domain mydomain.com to 51.244.97.19
Point the A record of your domain www.mydomain.com to 51.244.97.19
So basically I had to login to registrars cPanel and first of all I had to park my domain back to my registrar (I had to switch to default nameservers which are provided by domain registrar)
Only then I got advanced access to dns zone in order to add the required records above.
When I open my domain registrars dns zone cpanel this is what I see:
http://prntscr.com/nekx40
So basically, as I understand, I just need to add these required records like this?
http://prntscr.com/nekxjc
Am I correct?
So basically my OVH webhosting doesn't deal with dns zone at all, I will have to use my own registrar for adding subdomains?
What about e-mail addresses? OVH doesnt allow me to create emailboxes for "externally" parked domain addresses. Will I have to search for some e-mail provider, and add some additional records?
Any input/help would be appreciated.1 -

Dokku, Flynn, Deis Workflow, Datacol, nanobox.
Does anyone have experience with one of these? Do you recommend any?
I have been amazed by Heroku concept, however, Heroku prices seem to be a bit pricey. I have a production app to be produced in the following weeks, and I was thinking about getting a Public Cloud machine from OVH with one of the tools above.
Any suggestions? -
Are there any sysadmins here who know how to deal with ddos attacks properly? I can even offer pay. Situation is that I launched my java app (gameserver) on linux debian and configured iptables to allow only specific ips. Basically I made only 1 port open for loginserver and if player logins into loginserver it adds his ip to iptables so hes able to proceed to gamesever. However I am still receiving massive up to 900MB/s attacks for example: http://prntscr.com/q3dwe8
It appears that even if I left only one port open, I still can't defend against ddos attacks. I made some captures with tcpdump and analyzed them on wireshark but to be honest I cant really tell what I'm looking at.
I am using OVH which is supposed to be ddos protected but maybe I messed up during iptables configuration, I'm not sure.
Can anyone help?15 -
