Switched from single threaded gevent server to an nginx configuration, added ssl, and setup a reverse proxy to flask socketio, all with less than 10 minutes aggregate downtime. On the prod server. \o/

Can I just say, fuck app wrappers.

Why? Well let me tell you the story of cordova.

My plan was to make a leaderboard kind of thing for the tablesoccer we do at the place I'm interning at.

How it would work:
app -> create game -> API -> live feed
Buttons (flic) -> API
API -> RTU -> live feed

They use Symfony internally and externally, so that was my first go to.

I couldn't find any way to do Symfony that can do RTU without running another service.

As they really want an app but it's not their core domain I looked around for options for wrappers and decided to put RTU on the backburner.

Setting up cordova was slightly annoying but was okay. I got to building the base app.

Then I thought, maybe let's get RTU working with cordova. Looked at the options that were available. Decided to check out socketio since it had an tutorial for cordova. Tried it and it didn't work. Went over the whole internet but nobody seems to have a solution that works (the most recent post being 2017)

So I thought, let's get websockets to work instead, but again. Seems like O just can't get it to work.

So, guess what I'm going to do?
AJAX ever 1 second to the API.

Why the hell does RTU have to be so hard cordova. You are the only open source wrapper that's both multiplatform and easy to set up. Why can't you just work...

I might just call it quits on the app and just make a mobile friendly website instead.. Where socketio and websockets just work. As does SSE..

I'm tired, so sorry for the rambling I hope somebody can make sense of this mess.

This SocketIO method emits a message to all users who have joined the same room (conversation ID).

This works if it's a 1-to-1 chat or a group chat with infinite users in the group.

The thing that bothers me is this enhanced for loop. It loops through ALL currently connected users.

- If theres 10 users, sure no big deal

- if theres 1000 users, it has to loop 1000 times

- for N users it loops N times

What if N = 10000? God what if it's 100,000 or 1,000,000.

Imagine having to loop that many times every time you want to send just 1 message.

OR wait i just realized. This shit grabs ALL users -- but within the room ID. Right? Am i trippin balls here

Im now confused (excuse my confusion i coded till 3am last night and im still fried). Is my logic flawed? Have i written this piece of code with good performance or not?

So any fellow Socket.io dev here know how to reduce the delay of my app? When I send an event it sometimes takes like 10 seconds to send the data to the server then to 2 other clients using io.sockets.emit. I'm on LAN where the server and the sender client is connected with a switch then the receiver is on wifi which is connected to the same switch so it's not far away.

Anyways it uses WEBSOCKETS so it should be fast right???!?! Is windows keeping my packets back? (poor packets :( they just wanna arrive :( )

Does anyone know why websockets aren't used far and wide for APIs? I mean not like chat applications, but the typical webapp, say an online shop. For me it seems kinda wasteful to fire separate requests with tiny payloads all the time. I currently use moleculer and socketio for a quite big project with multiple websites and backend containers, and so far, i haven't found a disadvantage.
So what have i missed?

SocketIO can't listen to the event 'ping'. Spent unnecessary time on it. Could've been mentioned in the docs. 😑

How are you doing it guys, i was trying to find project where i could find out how it works, recently followed flask tutorial for blog, and checked out chat with flask-socketIO, but have overwhelming feeling like everything was already developed and Am so much behind ( like learning web in 2018 - what im doing here ) + like its not enough, all are spamming about how AI will take work also from coders

Hey, I need a little help here and I don't have a lot of time to figure this out.

I have this piece of code which I wrote in flask when I had just ventured into programming. The idea is that we have two excel sheets a search file and a demand file, all we need to do is search for the names from the demand file in the search file and then produce the result in an appropriate format. The problem, the names don't match up, quite often. Sometimes the spellings are wrong sometimes the way they named one things in the files is different, so, for that I have a keyword based search and I make another sheet called guesses where this data is then written.

I made it for my mom who's a doctor and does procurement (buying stuff) for the hospital. It was just a small project to help her and her team with a very inconvenient and boring task and I never could host it cause I really didn't know how to (in py) and I had used socketIO in flask along with threading and stuff. But now, shit has hit the fan as the software is suddenly in demand for obvious reasons.

Turns out... Angular doesnt have a fucking library or a way to communicate directly with kafka that's built on a separate backend!

I would have to either call a REST route to the backend which then forwards transmitting the "real time" request to kafka broker. Or transmit a socketio real time event to trigger kafka.

What kind of BULLSHIT is this? Why the fuck would i use kafka at all then in this case? I could replace it and cut the shit with socketio! Ridiculous!
