15 years ago I had a job interview as technical leader. They asked me about the trendy framework in those days, Struts. I didn't know much to be honest. I actually started to study java the month before. I was 30 y.o. and I managed to sell myself well.

I got the job. I never saw Struts, the real job was to migrate a z/OS application written on PL/I for DB2 (all things where new to me, I programmed something in VB when I was younger, before studying a career in statistics). Anyway, somebody else already scaffolded Struts, I implemented some business logic here and there, and mostly tried to make sense of the monster-legacy.

Fast forward now.
Two months ago I was interviewed on the last version of Angular and AWS devops, kubernetes etc. I managed not to look completely idiot, but honestly, I never went beyond an Hello World in Angular, and kubernetes, well, I like the name.

I got the job as Technical Architect.

First project I'm assigned to: migrate a 15 years old Struts application to cloud.
Somebody has containerized everything.
Somebody will scaffold a dotNet application.

I'll watch. Maybe I'll write some nice powerpoint presentation. Maybe I'll fill in some business logic in some methods.

I wanted really to be a technical Architect and do things other modern people do.

I actually wanted to learn something.

Anyway.
For 160K$ a year is not bad, I wouldn't complain.

My GPU blocks the airflow from the lower front intake fan to the CPU, so I wanted to have a fan in the 5.25" drive bay directly targeting the CPU.

While that bay fits a 140mm fan nicely, there was no mounting point. I ended up making four fan struts out of the metal covers for the 5.25" inserts, the ones that you wiggle out. Drilled holes into the case, a bit of foam above and below the fan to seal the larger gaps, and done.

The trick is ofc that the 5.25" case covers are meshed and hence act both as air intake and dust filter. The CPU runs a few K cooler under load.

This is stupid but i think is my best idea yet.

So i have an old orange pi, with only 256m memory. Its running a few tasks i need but i wanted to use it for controlling a few things from my phone (lights and powering on my pc) so i thought i would make a server for that. Now mind you, my shirt doesnt say "lightweight backend language", so there was no way the pi couldve handled a struts server. I was digging around and found that php has a shell_exec command. Then it clicked, and i wrote the whole system like
shell_exec("java -jar someprocess.jar"). Now this sounds really stupid but it works and php is really light so it doesnt even slow it down that much.

Thinking about making this into some kinda server/framework/something just for fun.

Got a new job on a big brand bank in the financial district in NYC, went through multiple code interviews, 2 hours of in person interviews asking me about architectures, design patterns, solutions to imaginary complex problems(which I enjoyed thinking about), finally got accepted, background checks needed before starting (previous job check, credit, drugs, etc..) so I waited 2 months, 1st day at work, the building is huge and cool, biggest spaces I've ever seen, amazingly insane large monitors and people working on a great variety of new technologies.

I was assigned to a corner far away from the open spaces, trying to understand a project that I will maintain who works with java 5, struts and jsp(for fucks sake, JSP!!!)

Why life laughs on my face? why?

- Eclipse (especially when plugged in with any SCM, excluding Che)
- RichFaces / PrimeFaces (from the pre SPA era)
- WebLogic (how many times do you need to be restarted in a day? )
- SOAP (not a dev technology, but even as a protocol. Thank You Microsoft !!!)
- Struts (what were you doing at the same time as Spring ??? )
- GWT (how did this even find its place inside Google? )

Need more time a deeper retrospective of each dev tech I've come across :(

Hopefully at work we have successfully migrated from a combination of MySQL and Mongo to only Postgres. Also we finally split up our monolith into medium sized services, so we can actually do something interesting and update our dependencies.
And port one of the services from Java Struts to Django..
..but that is only if developers were to set the plan...if sales/management: new feature here! new feature there! sell sell sell! No time for maintenance!

"U wanna create new module? Just copy paste this file and several file, then rename it to your new module", but that each of that file is contain thousand LOC, then i realize all of module created use the same way.

Does anyone else find the Struts2 default error page fucking irritating?

Example:

For the first time I paid for training(tuition, whatever) just coz my institution requires me to. And it was a complete waste of money. Teacher(or whoever he was), couldn't compile any of his programs. I had to look up tutorials for the entire thing myself, like I always do.
P.S. He was teaching server side java programming with struts and hibernate and using Tomcat as a server.

ok I think a lot of my frustrations in rust stemmed from assuming struts are like objects and therefore can contain conceptually similar things in them that in your head would seem like the same "object", and that methods should be derived therefore and such

but in reality in rust struts are for conforming to borrowing rules and it doesn't care about your conceptual organization I guess. if you try to organize things like the structs as objects then you get borrowing issues on some occasions and then I would get stuck trying to figure out how to put a method on a struct when I need to drop borrowing to do some task and whatever

the solution is to throw out your human notions of organization

so I guess it's more bare-bones to how the machine thinks about stuff (well how the borrowing is coded in the language) and doesn't care how a human does (like notions like object orientated design)

this is odd to me in a modern language but at least I've crawled out of my brain damage with enough drug-use now that I can have such epiphanies I guess. I feel so slow. I swear this should've been massively obvious and easy to grasp in like a few days before for me. rip

instead it was 2-3 years of ~5 months of actually deep coding 😒

also I can blame people saying rust can do everything, like that you can do object orientated design in it. they're being dishonest and it's harmful to the learning process if you're acting like that 😩. stop being a cult, you'll literally be more popular
