Switched to DuckDuckGo, because Google thought it would be nice, to ban the Proxy IP of our company (because you know, many requests) from searching and putting us behind these captcha monstrosities. I don't want to captcha myself out of every query I have for goddamn 2 minutes with slow ass fading images.
Turns out, I like their service even more.9 -

Be me. Use DDG to search for nearby bowling alleys. DDG provides reviews in form of Yelp. Click "read more" on review. Yelp transfers me to a bogus url, which prompts

And then, without letting me click "No", I get automatically transferred into Yelp's page in the app store, and if I try to go back, I just get redirected again.
Fuck off. I just wanted to read your reviews in the browser. I had no interest of downloading your app just to read a couple of reviews, and I most certa-fuck-inly have no desire to download your shitty app now.1 -
Had a 5 hour call today, where we wanted to set up a system from one of our subcontractors in our own environment. Struggled forever to get the backend up and running.
Turns out that some dependencies were hardcoded as local file URLs...

Working with Yelp API.
Had a working method to return Restaurant List in a separate project.
Moved that code to a new project.
Spent 3 hours trying to figure out why the tried and true method was returning an empty list.
I forgot I had also made a helper method in that other project to turn km into meters.
Instead of searching a 5km radius, I was searching a 5 meter radius...
(Prior to that I mixed up my longitude and latitude, and searched for pizza places in the antarctic. Spoiler: There are none.) -
In the mid-2010s, we barely had any apps in our native language and popular coupon and review sites were lackluster in our neck of the woods.
So me and some old uni colleagues got together to make a WhatsApp based "wtf is going on right now and right around here"
think Groupon meets yelp meets Google maps meet trending topics. The idea was that local business would post deals and events and people would comment on it giving stars on real time, with geolocation. So you could see what was going on right next to you, and business owners only needed WhatsApp installed to post new topics.
We... failed to go viral. That simple. Things get frustrating when infinite no-questions-asked venture capital is not available.
Then me and the other founders got very lucrative jobs in former British colonies and that was it.
This idea might still work nowadays, but it would be reeeealy hard to navigate around Whatsapp's terms of service.

1. found a business that does apartment listings in the style of social media.
2. focus on helping people find less-shit room mates. Like yelp, but for assholes.
3. make your money on helping millennials and gen-z manage and automate rental payments, because both those generations HATE having to look people in the eyes, having to ask for money, or anything involving negotiation. Automate the pain, monetize their avoidance habits.
4. Dashboard for splitting bills, handling rental and sub-let agreements, and divying up rental payments.
5. Get paid by geolocated advertisers for small business services, e.x. roof repair, plumbing, lawn mowing, pool cleaning, etc.
6. That positions you to do strategic partnerships with companies that provide platforms for small business providers, like angieslist.
Had this idea a while back but pursuing something else and just wanted to put it out there for people more capable than me. Lot of great developers out there that beat around for good ideas, and then there are a lot of people with good ideas who don't have the skills to implement.
Call it flattmates, or snagahome, or something like that.
On the offchance anyone decides to go for it, and you get funded, hire me to do grunt work, thats all the thanks I want.

Just had a memory popup about my uni days about 5 years ago. I was in my Junior year in business school and was doing a "consulting" project involving the whole Class (200 students). Groups of 4 were assigned an international company in either Europe, Asia, or South America. We'd visit them (as well as do some sightseeing) and learn about them (performance, market positions, products) during Spring Break and come up with a real proposal. We would then compete with other teams, and the winning pitchs for each would be presented in the school auditorium in front the entire class.
Our team didn't get that far but that's not the point. We did win the individual classroom competition. Our company was Deutsche Telekom (owner of T-Mobile).
This was in 2010, when the iPhone/smart-phones started to become mainstream... And our team's idea was location-based advertising.
Looking back, we basically predicted the future... though we got the wrong industry...
It's also sort of funny though because I remember the main reason we came up with the idea was to be different.
All other teams just went with some expansion plan to a neighboring country or cutting costs.... pure MBA/business plan. But I guess I was being a natural techie so thought of a tech idea instead.
We had a meeting with our professor after he picked us and he told us he had a history of spotting future hits. We were like "hm... ok... let's give it a shot... we definitely got an A!" but at that point I was sort of skeptical if this would actually work in real-life (the basic idea was they would sell ads to local businesses and if you were nearby, you would get a text message with an offer).
But guess he was pretty right... we just needed to have Google or Facebook to have been our company... though Groupon or Yelp works too... basically a tech company with larger scale rather than a mobile carrier...1
