Be visible! As much in the action as possible. As much in the comms with mgmt, stakeholders, clients as possible.
You can be the best and smartest engineer in the world, but if noone sees you - noone will know you exist.6 -
Network, talk to people, and get yourself on the spot, document everything and make sure that you take action when others do not.
Kissing ass can take you far, but I ain't about that life, because sooner or later the fucker that promoted you because he liked his pp getting suckd by you will leave or get put in the spot. Or change alleagiances.
Your best bet is to be ANYTHING OTHER THAN A FUCKING NECKBEARD WITH AUTISM and be someone that people likes being around, I know it sounds hardcore, but people around you will ignore the things you don't know if you are a charismatic guy. Dress well, work out or find ways to improve yourself in ways that are noticeable, use human psychology to be fucking likeable.
Work hard, both on yourself and on your craft, study, get better, be social.
Stop being a twat because high chances are that the higher executives of your branch will not give a shit about your knowledge, but how good is to have you around. Join the circle, fuck your opinions about anything else, this is business, and business doesn't care about a lot of things. Don't cut throats, but make yourself a force to be reckoned with.

Own before you do it.
Create user stories, fill tickets, draw diagrams, send approval mails, fill docs, write in the company blog and then some, before you even think about writing a line of code.2 -
this may sound like bs, but it's mostly about posture. it's fine to be a bit slower than the rest, but being punctual, responsible, patient, engaged, those are things people notice and value. if you're gonna be the boss you're not gonna be doing minion tasks anyway, it makes sense to pick someone with soft skills and maturity5

Make sure you are noted for every work you do. Don't let upper managers to take credit of your work.2

Tips on getting promoted on work:
1. Collect a list of all improvements and achievements that u did during your time in that workplace
2. Compare your output with your colleagues output, check their MR's, their complexity and compare with yours.
3. Talk with your manager about a raise. Tell him about your achievements, like maybe you are working on a wider scope than others. Maybe you are mentoring junior devs. Or maybe you deal with a bigger workload than others but still deliver on time. Maybe your communication is good or maybe you document stuff very well and in that way you make your team more efficient and increase team output. Whatever. Pitch and sell yourself. Also provide some personal reasons why you need a raise, like maybe u have kids or maybe your rent doubled. Inflation and so on. Selling point is that u are a human not a greedy bastard.
At the end of that talk the manager most likely will say that he needs to speak higher ups, he needs to gather feedback from your colleagues and so on. Give him a week or two if possible, no more.
He will probably get back to you with an offer. If there is none start applying, get an offer and put in your notice. In my case I waited 3 months for my raise to go through. I put in my notice, had a stressed call from manager, showed him my offer and my raise was arranged the next day. -
I know I am late as all hell to this question, but my favorite place (more accurately - time), is in college during statistics and probability class.
Just to keep the theoretical bullshit away.
(theorists don't @ me)3 -
Be good at your job and go just that bit beyond. It can be simple as that in a non-hostile environment.1

Mostly, it's employees licking their manager's boots or sucking their dick.
There, that's how you get promoted.5
