Do you remember how you've found devRant?
Frankly, i don't. I probably was looking for a technical solution to something.
Also, how long did it take before you registered?
Found app or site first?
It took me more than a year or so before I decided to register. I'm a quite old user. Had a different account once. RIP.37 -
I love it when a safety feature meets an edge case.
I was driving along the highway, with adaptive cruise control on. There were cars in front of me and also behind me.
The car ahead of me set his turn indicator to the right and was decelerating for the exit ramp.
All good, heart rate 60bpm, there was plenty of space to get passed...
Suddenly, my car was like "PANIC, PANIC, EMERGENCY, BRAKE BRAKE BRAKE!!" And some automagic emergency brake triggered.
And I was like, "WHAAATT THEE FUUU...."
You cannot make these random emergency stops when a car is trailing your ass at high speed.
Yeah, it was something with the radar and the car fluctuating in front but anyway, nice feature.5 -
I quit my job in January. I haven't worked for 6 months, I live off savings and investments and I don't really know what to do with myself except that I finally have time to finish all my pet projects and I'm really doing them one by one, which makes me feel the best I have in years.
Moneywise, I've thought about writing a book or a game, but I mostly just ride my bike or Netflix and chill and do literally nothing.
I'm almost 40 and I feel like I was 18 but very, very sleepy - all the time.
Thoughts?
Also, I asked AI and it assumed I'm a woman. I find that funny.19 -
SSL was a good idea terribly implemented. Relying only on big tech for valid certificates was the single most idiotic thing the web baboons could come up with.
Sure, you could always hack comodo (again) to issue yourself some LAN certs but come on. You either expose your server or pay half a kidney for a somewhat secure thing! Give me a break....9 -
Current workload as dev lead:
- 1% actual development
- 2,5% waiting for SaaS to load
- 2,5% cursing company server network connectivity issues
- 5% switching VPNs
- 7,5% pkg management & deploys
- 10% writing JIRA and support tickets
- 12,5% filling in timesheets
- 15% coaching & reviewing a bot coworker
- 19% doing 2FA, refreshing expired passwords
- give up and spend the remaining 25% doing something meaningful8 -
there is a dev in our company who actually does this:
if()
{
}
and not this:
if(){
}
This is unreal.21 -

Its fucking impossible to utilize less than 8 hours for a 5-9. I cant work on my side project with this pace
Please help me how to optimize my time so i can both work this 9-5 job and also work on my side project from 5-96 -
Video game graphics have peaked. It absolutely has. It's gotten to a stage where 500% extra effort would result in 5% improvement which is not worth it imo.
We have games that were released in 2010's which still hold up to today's standards.
If every game company could fucking stop with the graphics improvements and actually work on building bangers to play and have fun with, that'd be great.14 -
I no longer give a single flying fuck about whether this company I work for lives or dies, whether it succeeds or fails. My compensation has been piss poor compared to the level of dedication I have put in and the level of stress I've endured. Up until now, I was thinking like "well, it's a growing startup, maybe if it succeeds it can have some doors open for me". But fuck it.
I keep hearing about software developers doing pretty well for themselves, but I can barely pay my fucking bills with this shit company in this shit country.
I should've started doing this sooner, and I'm a stupid-ass motherfucker for not having been doing it, but I'll be looking for jobs with actual respectable pay now. I'm not bound by a notice time in my contract, so maybe I'll be telling whatever other companies that I can start with them immediately if they need me to.
Seriously fuck this company and its low-ass compensation. If I'm going to be paid this low, I might as well take a less stressful job with less skill requirements.
I will be jumping ship and I won't be caring one bit if it fucking sinks.5 -
When the company puts a 2 week freeze on all prod updates for the holidays , but still makes you show up for work (with nothing to do). 😭7

Non-native English speakers, before vehicle was vee'ekl, was it veh-hick-l or veh-hike-el? For me, it was the former, but I knew people who used the latter!8

Being in IT is difficult.
At first noone wants you, even for pennies.
Then everything seems difficult and complex, you start to envy the giants (seniors) who are headhunted via various channels.
Then you reach the kind of level where you start receiving some attention in linkedin - you almost want to frame them! Feeling so proud of yourself..
Then these job offers become sooo annoying.. But they keep flowing in from everywhere..
I wonder what's next6 -
CI came up with 265 errors. (deploying to an old server to bring it back).
I make some very clever fixes and run it again.
Now we have 269 errors.

Anyone who says 'Docker is easy" should burn in hell.
Sure, It took me 5 minutes to run my project in docker container
Took another 25 to run multipl;e comntainers via compose
Now, 3 hours later, can't run compose from multiple Visual Studio solutions. Says "Pull failed"
No doc. No examples. No nothing.
I'll try for another hour or so, if not, fuck that docker shit. I'll go to Service fabric.13 -
That's it. I'm inventing a new position :
"Dev support".
Why do people ask me "Hey, visual studio has a pop up saying I'm missing a .net4.6 framework. What should I do ?"
Or "Hey powershell says script execution is disabled, what should I do ?"
Google motherfucker, do you use it ?!4 -
linkedin recruiter asking for my email...
