The most unrealistic deadline? Okay, here it goes. For context, this is one of my earliest jobs, and I’m actively using React.
— Kiki, I have a stunning idea! Let’s build a Figma clone!
— Okaaaay, 🧐
— You have two days.
— A what?
— I’ve just stumbled upon an amazing new technology. You maybe don’t know it yet. It’s called React.js, and you totally can build a full Figma clone in two days using it!
— …
— It’s a revolution, and you’re so ignorant for not following it. Are you even a real engineer?
— …
Two days later:
— Forget about Figma! Let’s build an online DAW for musicians!
That guy was nuts. I left when we had an executive meeting, I was explaining tech things, and he suddenly popped out a fucking tambourine and started striking it. One year later, he lost everything and went to get a junior C++ position at an outsourcing company.6 -
My CTO told the COO and CEO i'd be finished SOC2 compliance by the end of December... On December 14th.
It takes 3 months to do the audit, let alone all the actual work. I hadn't even started yet.
He was fired shortly after that.6 -
Is it just a coincidence that there is always somebody going crazy here? And it's always one after another?
Seeing how there's only one thing in common. Coding is making us crazy!6 -
Some "engineers" entire jobs seems to only consist of enforcing ridiculous bureaucracy in multinational companies.
I'm not going to get specific, the flow is basically:
- Developer that has to actually write code and build functionality gets given a task, engineer needs X to do it - a jenkins job, a small k8s cluster, etc.
- Developer needs to get permission from some highly placed "engineer" who hasn't touched a docker image or opened a PR in the last 2 years
- Sends concise documentation on what needs to be built, why X is needed, etc.
Now we enter the land of needless bureaucracy. Everything gets questioned by people who put near 0 effort into actually understanding why X is needed.
They are already so much more experienced than you - so why would they need to fucking read anything you send them.
They want to arrange public meetings where they can flaunt their "knowledge" and beat on whatever you're building publicly while they still have nearly 0 grasp of what it actually is.
I hold a strong suspicion that they use these meetings simply as a way to publicly show their "impact", as they'll always make sure enough important people are invited. X will 99% of the time get approved eventually anyway, and the people approving it just know the boxes are being ticked while still not understanding it.
Just sick of dealing with people like this. Engineers that don't code can be great, reasonable people. I've had brilliant Product Owners, Architects, etc. But some of them are a fucking nightmare to deal with.7 -
As a developer I never understood the intended benefit of standups. Issues + a scrum/kanban board like trello or GitHub project + a chat for quick questions or to schedule an ad-hoc pair programming session should be enough to make everyone know everything they need to know about the project status at any time.
Obliging developers to talk in a group session to reiterate in a more verbose way what they already wrote down when working on it, will make a lot of people uncomfortable. Talking too much or not complying to the talking rules is an expected side effect besides anxiety and reduced productivity.
If you want a talk show, hire talk masters.
If you want software development, hire software developers.
Don't confuse one with the other!10 -
A 520MB CSV file with 29 columns and no headers.
If it's not an impertinent question, why in the name of Satan's magnificent testicles would anyone do that?
I hope their pig dies.14 -
I was completely happy with my 12 inch MacBook. Never had a single problem. Butterfly keyboard was amazing, one Type-C port was always enough for me.
The only reason I switched to Air M1 was fucking React. React devserver was so heavy I needed something like M1 to make the development speed at least tolerable.
But, the good thing is, I don’t use React anymore. My production bundle, with minification, is 73 ms. I can daily-drive my beautiful, 12 inch, 900 g MacBook again!5 -
Guys, please don't scream at me :D
i need a tool to be installed on ubuntu that check if a specific process is running or not, if not then it starts it automatically22 -
I got the job! 🥳 🎉
One company wanted me to wait a little over a week because they had other final round interviews going on. Meanwhile, during that time, I got an offer, but declined because of lower than expected salary and higher salary on the other potential offer. Later, they got back and increased the salary and changed the role to Lead. Got the role after one more round of interview. 😁10 -
Is prompt engineering going to be the next "big thing"?
Very related fun fact: SQL was meant for business people so they can quickly generate reports w/out needing to rely on programmers. (When was the last time your CEO did a DB query on prod I wonder?!)13 -
Rant 1
---
I have so much shit to talk about and its annoying to wait 2+ hours between each rant just to rant so ill start off by ranting about not being able to rant as often as i want to rant
Rant 2
---
What is ORM doing under the hood if it makes the queries so much slower than compared to writing raw sql?
Rant 3
---
Im thinking of creating more accounts just to be able to say what i want to say without waiting these dumbass 2+ hours. Who tf even made that and thought it was a good idea. Ur not saving ur bandwidth storage by making devs wait to rsnt bro itll be the same shit
Rant 4
---
Now by writing 3 rants in a row i forgot what i wanted to rant about more and its an enitrely different topic so ill rant about not remembering what i wanted to rant about because of devrants dumbass 2+ hour wait logic
Rant 5

Wow this new york company looking for senior devops dev requires a lot less shit to know compared to the saudi arabian shithole company for the exact same position. But how do i learn all of what they require fast so i can apply for this position since the recruiter has contacted me20 -
How do you convince your manager that a certain feature is absolutely not yet ready to be released. Any warnings & concerns fall on deaf ears 🤡6

Guys, when you have to manually edit records in the prod DB, please at least make sure that your overweight cat isn't rolling around on the keyboard...8
