Ladies and Gentlemen,
I present you the API I'm working with...
That's a pretty fucking useful error description right there.20 -
People in my office sing me praises for what I can do with Linux even though I joke with them that “I have no idea how to do that - but give me half an hour and an internet connection and I’ll figure something out for you.” I even once specifically said in response to my boss commenting on my skills, “You do realize that I just like…google stuff when you ask me to do something with Linux that I don’t know how to do, right?”
But his praise didn’t change at all. There was no “Wait, that’s all it is?”
Instead, he said “Yes, but the fact that you think to do that - and that you know exactly how to phrase your searches and how to sift through the results to get the right answer, and you then integrate what you’ve learned and use it going forward - is still so much more than any of the rest of us can do. To you, it’s “just googling stuff,” but it’s still a unique and valuable skill you bring, so don’t shrug off the compliments so cavalierly, okay?“
And this was coming from an executive with an MBA. Don’t undervalue your googling skills, kids. It’s not lying if you know you can figure it out.8 -
So I spent the last 2 hours trying to figure out why my co-workers source when hitting the API I built was not working. They kept saying that the problem was the API and I kept saying that it's their implementation.
Turns out it was their implementation and as well as the API. Their implementation problem was not setting the "Accept" in the header. The API problem is how Laravel will return a JSON error response ONLY IF the "Accept" is set in the header.
I actually documented this into the API documentation but it's obvious that none of my co-workers read that you need to set the headers correctly. I think the more scary thing is that they didn't know the difference between Accept and Content-Type!!7 -
Heyyy Fellow devRant users, wanted to know has anyone else been in this situation before? it happens to me quite a bit now and usually always makes me laugh :-D, i'll set the scenario for you here.
*Me talking to stranger on the bus*
Me - "How are you doing today mate"
Stranger - "very well thank you, off to work, how about yourself?"
Me - "Very good thanks mate, I'm off to Uni for the day :D"
Stranger - "Thats great, what do you study mate?"
Me - "Well I'm doing a course in Software Development!, i very much enjoy what I'm studying!"
Stranger - "Wow, you must be very good at fixing printers and stuff hey"
well... it sorta ends there but hopefully you get the picture :D, this is usually how my conversations with strangers ends up. As you may notice i tend to 'talk too much' :D,
hope you're having a great night or day where ever you may be :D. - Milo16 -

I am starting a computer science project and I need some data from people. I am planing on making a programming MMO as a teaching recourse and need some feedback from users.
It would be like a cross between Factorio and Screeps.

Learning a new programming language is a lot like putting on a new pair of underpants. At first it's restrictive but then it becomes a part of you!4

without deciding on what content to include, how can you ask me for the layout of the landing page 😡1

Worst fight with another dev was whether a textbox should have a height of 24px or 28px ... It lasted 30 minutes to resolve that4

Am I the only one who reads CSS "!important" as "not important", because of the '!'? No matter how many times I read it ....4

My coworkers are all working remotely because they're hungover, and all shocked I'm in the office today.
You think a night of drinking and 4 hours of sleep is enough to hold me down? Please. If I'm hungover enough to not go to work it means I'm probably in the hospital lol.
That being said, I have discovered that scotch does not agree with my stomach, so I'm not having the best time. At least I'm here though!9 -
The transition from a tiny developer ( full stack programmer) for a startup to an increasing more proficient and more responsible one really doesn't get talked about enough it's seen as pure positive but honestly, I'm at the point where the increasingly more users more feedback more complaining and now no more, can I simply just please all of my users. I don't have enough time in the day to turn my project into the perfect application I want it to be or the community I'm supporting. Now that I'm on the clock and users, investors and my partners looking at to me for progress, development seems to be at a snail's pace. I'm worried and I feel like a majority is me trying to be pessimistic at a brighter future. Any advice from devs that have been in this position or currently is very apperciated, Cheers.
P.S picture is a self portrait by the way. -
Just go out and use Laravel. Is not that hard people.
P.S. Please rant about better things 😐
P.P.S. I'm late for the trend but you get the point...8 -
Developers are the only people that knock off for work at 8pm, and at 7am your project manager wants to see something new on where you left off. What happened to fairness?

I get so high on the feeling of relief when I find out that a problem with my program could be solved so easily.
Right now I am high.1 -
I probably dont balance it well. I spend majority of my day either reading code, reading about code, or writing it. I would say my balance comes on the weekends. I hang out with my girl more and I not in front of the computer as much. But even on the weekends I sneak in a few hours of code. My leisure time is literally sitting at a starbucks with my favorite text editor listening to a playlist and coding. That's like total zen for me.
