I got my new Oryx Pro today, from System76. It came with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I opted not to get Pop!_OS or Ubuntu 18.10, as I would prefer to leave the OS on it for the longterm.

Even at 15.6", it's a BIG laptop. It measures 18" from corner to corner, when it's closed. It comfortably fits in my backpack, which is a bit on the small side, but it's probably about 30-50% heavier than a MacBook Pro.

But that size and weight are vindicated by the most thuggish hardware I have ever seen in a laptop. As configured, this machine has a 4.1GHz 8th gen i7, 32GB of DDR4 at 2666MHz, an 8GB GTX 1070, a 250GB nvme system disk, and a 1TB SSD for data.

The display is set by default to 4K resolution, but I cranked that down to FHD for the sake of my eyes and the battery. I will try some games at higher resolution at some point, but for desktop navigation, I get more use out of multiple virtual desktops than in massive resolution.

I will comment tomorrow or the day after with the steps I've taken to bend this beast to my will, and it's also important to say that I have not finished yet. This is just a summary, but I should have been in bed an hour ago, so I'm gonna go do that.

Years later the supposed 'cancer' that is linux: a fully featured, and more and more polished FREE operating system running Microsoft development tools, a rich GUI which does away with the crappy windows 98 taskbar, multiple virtual desktops, and steam !

I seriously don't fucking understand those people who like programming iDevices.

I mean, in my personal experience you have:
- iPhone not connecting to a WiFi (while working on a network project)
- Mac, while using multiple desktops on 2 monitors: I have the 3rd desktop active on the 2nd monitor, search for terminal to open it and it opens in the 1st desktop of the first monitor
- while making an app (ionic or unity), is about 5 to 15 times slower compared to the same android apps (same exact code, but gotta go throught XCode, y'know?)
- takes YEARS to download XCode, but is necessary to even just build for lastest iPhones updated
- takes years to upload to AppStore and when it's done it just tells you "oh bitch, you know what? you forgot that fucking icon for tablets, how about you rebuild it all? and NO, you have to change the build number or I won't accept it"
- App quality was so pedantic on the first publish but then always fucks it up at the second upload, like "hey we checked it the first time, now we can just 100% trust it works and doesn't use anything scammy"
- code+compiled app for iOS is like 1GB while android vode+build is like 100MB WTF do you even put in those 900MB? random trash? WHY?
- I'm not even gonna get into the forums or the amount of money you have to pay for both product and services
- MacOS works ALMOST like Linux, but takes all the worst from both windows and linux to give you the worst performance with the best graphics, but it looks cool, so doesn't matter

I have begun to prefer a single monitor over multiple ones. Currently I have my laptop and a 1080 23" at home. I have been getting used to just the 23" with the laptop closed. With multiple workspaces/desktops I find it quicker to just use my keyboard to switch over to look at something and switch back.

Which leads me to consider a single ultrawide monitor for my next upgrade. Thanks for reading.

I HATE WINDOWS' WINDOW MANAGEMENT. I have two monitors and nothing can be maximized. Windows' spaces are terrible as well.
I am building in the back end in VS Code.
I have three terminals open because I need them to run multiple parts of the app locally.
I have postman open to try requests.
I have firefox for the orm system's documentation.
I have my database tool running as well.
I have an ERD diagram floating in a window.
I have another VS Code window showing a diff of my JSON compared to the version I'm replacing.
Also all of my team communication tools.

I have never hated shuffling windows around so much. Would it kill us to use some command line tools for http instead of Postman? Could we please get a decent shell in windows? Could we get some simple ways to switch between virtual desktops? Click click click. I can't automate clicking. Why do we use the most clicky tools we can find?

I'm finally learning to incorporate multiple desktops into my workflow. So far, I like how it segregates my social programs from my web browsers from my code applications.

I only use a 1 monitor setup. I just use multiple virtual desktops, it's easier for me to switch desktops with the trackpad then move my head to look at multiple monitors. Surely that's more efficient right?

Some long thoughts about state of desktop operating systems.

I always hated window management on desktop. There is basically no difference in usability between mobile and desktop in terms of application management. There is still finite amount of apps you can have in focus and you need to switch between them so they’re left from your screen.

What you end up is finite amount of screens you can connect into your computer or pounding switch context shortcut every other second.

We pushed computing so far and screen resolutions doubled from 1024x768 but the active desktop size is still the same.

For me adding additional display to laptop is not an option. What I love with remote work is that I can lay in my bed or on sofa or wherever I want to and write some code. My point is I don’t want to be stuck to my desk if I want to write / debug something.

Back to the desktop I think there is missing part of our state of desktop right now. The most we have are virtual desktops we can switch between but we can’t get parts of two desktops on same screen.

What I would love to test / develop is smooth infinite desktop with pinch and zoom - drag and drop navigation between my apps.

The problematic thing is determination of where user want’s to focus - is it fullscreen app or multiple apps on same screen and how to handle partially visible windows.

But I would love to test it. Maybe one day I switch to linux desktop just to try to implement the infinite desktop as an alternative to virtual desktops.

Maybe some rich frustrated kid would make it someday while I’m stuck at working my shit ass to pay for being able to have a decent life on this fucking planet…
I wish I can retire to focus on such things.

Switching from Linux to some old Win7/8 computer and trying to use multiple desktops

I need some advice on how to separate workstations. Currently I'm working with 6 projects at the moment and sometimes I use my PC, sometimes win laptop, sometimes macbook and it has become a mess.

Ideally I would like to have separate windows/mac instances where I could have project specific stuff installed. Having different windows accounts is not an option since I'm not sure if I will be able to multitask between projects effectively. Separate windows desktops also is not good enough for me. Buying multiple PC's as well. Maybe some cloud solution would be the way?

Can anyone advice on this?

I don't know how much use others get out of the zoom functionality in browsers.

normally i have several different browsers open with multiple windows on a single monitor with half of them zoomed to 50% so I can fit more and still see everything at once without juggling whats on top or switching desktops.
