00:00: Yeah I'll change that now, it'll only take 5 minutes.
00:05: well that's done, better do this too though before I forget.
02:20: well that escalated quickly.. Better grab 3 hours sleep while I can.
04:00: Fuck.4 -
Boss: We need a new functionality to record company names for now.
Me: Ok. (This will be a quick one)
(few mins later)
Me: Ok, adding/editing/deleting company names.. done. I also added "date recorded" field, just in case we need it.
Boss: Ok, thanks.
(~20 mins later)
Boss: We also need a functionality for the users which has "this" permission to be able to "request" for a company registration. We need to add fields to record the contact person, email, phone, etc.. Once a "request" has been submitted, "this" person-in-charge has to get a notification on the dashboard. And the requesters, should get a notification that they have a pending request sent. Once the registration is done, the requester has to be notified.
Me: 👀6 -
Startup: let's improve on our MVP and build an actual website app.
Me: ok.
[go through 2 weeks discovery and planning stage]
Manager1: love working with you. You explain and work in a really professional manner.
[MVP gets built in 2 months, I'm the only dev designer devops throughout]
Manger1: Omg love it! Wait till the other manager sees it. I knew you were right person for the job.
Other users: oo cool. I love features x, y, z.
[two days later shows to Manager2]
Manager2: x doesn't work, feature you is not useful and doesn't work... Hate it. I think we'll move you to another project.
Me: (woah that escalated quickly meme plays in my mind)
Me: [explaining MVP, lean methodology, your internal decision making processes]
...
Manager2: Yeh we want you to not work on any development work (even though those are your skills and extensive knowledge etc) we need you to do admin tasks (that have nothing to do with product or coding etc)
Manager1 and employees: 😲 wtf
Me: I quit

Now they are struggling in every way possible and don't have enough funds to hire another person close to what they need to help them.4 -
INTERVIEW. It tells everything about the company. I recently applied for a "big" company for the position of ML Engineer. The Job description was like "someone with good knowledge of visual recognition, deep learning, advanced ML stuff, etc." I thought great, I might be a good fit. A guy called me the next day. Introduced himself as a manager of the Data Science team with 8+ years of experience. Started the talk saying "it is just an informal intro". But things escalated very quickly. Started shooting Data Science questions. He was asking questions in a very bookish way. Tells me to recite formulas (like big formulas). When I explained to him a concept, he was not understanding anything. Wanted a very bookish answer. I quickly realized I know more about ML stuff than him (not a big deal) and he is arrogant as fuck (not accepting my answers). Plus, he has no knowledge about Deep Learning. At the very end, he tells me "man, you need to clear up your fundamentals". WTH??? My fundamentals. Okay, I am not Einstein or Hinton, but I know I was answering things correctly. I have read books and research papers and blogs and all. When I don't know about things, I tell straight away. I don't cook answers. So the "interview" ended. I searched that man on LinkedIn. Got to know he teaches college students Data Science and ML. For a fee of 50,000 INR. It's a big amount!! Considering the things he teaches. You can find the same stuff (with far higher quality) free of cost (on Coursera, Udacity, YouTube, free books, what not). He is a cheater. He is making fool of college students. That is why I sometimes hate "experience". 8+ years of exp and he is such an a**hole!! BTW, I thanked God for saving me from that company. Can't imagine such an arrogant boss.
TLDR: Be vigilant during interviews. It tells a lot about the company.4 -
Programming contest assignments, first level:
1. "...if you don't know how to return values from a function, you can just print them"
2. "...if you don't know how to read files, you can assume data is in global variables"
3. Required recursion
4. "...and estimate its time complexity.", "You may pre-process the data, but use at most o(n^3)", "your algorithm must use under n^3 operations"

well, that escalated quickly...
today a coworker was asked if he could write a query to find customers which placed orders matching some criterias. so far so good. he write the query and put the result into a spreadsheet and gave it to the lead.
"i need it in another format" (he did not specify any format before nor did he tell which columns he is interested in). 2 hours later the query was finished.
then, the coworker got a call from the leader. he wants to see us both in his office.
"okay, we need to write a personalized mail to every customer with the orders in a spreadsheet as an attatchment. we also need this on paper as not everyone reads our mail. we want to send letters. the whole process needs to be finished in half a day and we want it automated. i do not want to have one of the sales department waste 2 hours writing stuff himself".
well, you can imagine my thoughts on that.
the personalized text is not finished. we wasted another 3 hours thinking about how to solve this crap.
luckily i have some projects from the past which can do this shit with some changes... but what the fucking hell was this?7 -

tldr: i take pride of our code! It hurts when someone calls it wrong when i know it was right.
So there was this integrations team that are trying to connect to our api. This team has been throwing different people to work with us. We even taught them how to use postman/soapui with ssl, even to the point that we search stackoverflow to resolve their code-level issues and left us halfway, then came back again repeating all process. A year passed, they came back with the same issue... now all answer that they get from us was to “review past conversation”, Today, they insist that we repeat ssl onboarding process as they are having issues with their current one, we insisted not to do it, and told them we (including them) can proceed without changing the client ssl. And told them we had a snippet sent to resolve their issues, but instead told us in a rude way, our sample is wrong. I was challenged to prove that we can make it work by eod. With their wrong sense of pride as theyve been working for that issue for long, they started throwing tantrums on us, saying that we do not need to make them feel that they do not know what their doing. man! Cmon, its you who requested that snippet few years back, then you tell us you dont need it as it is not working, in the first place, it is not our job to code for you asses,...i left the channel after. it was escalated quickly to management and accounts team(those people who only cares for traffic/money).. asked to return to the channel, spoonfed the details to them, provided a working snippet and left again.not sure what happened next.,. I hope this started a fire on our management to handle such incompetence. -
So...
I'm pretty sure that my satirical, educational, metaphor-esq, response was warranted... but just to check:
I'm having an issue with an online gambling platform... I'm in the USA-- recently several states allow online gambling. This specific one is a huge company so extra careful about proxies etc. To play via browser\desktop you need to install 3rd party, constant, network verification software... network architecture pro with my company's network, manually written ofc, running my static IPv4 /28 from my home = f that
app version even told me i had to uninstall rustdesk (it thinks i obeyed)
the issue is nothing controllable from client side... it's the same problem regardless of device, os (android phone, tablet, and iPad... fresh factory settings, bare bones and container versions... yea I was using it to procrastinate), network type, etc, etc
so i finally take the time to take a video of the issue (would be super confusing via screenshots)... even compress it to 1.5x speed and 240px, leaving the full screen (not cropping) and metadata intact. I point out that im a dev, and even worked for online gambling platforms...
i quickly mention all the noob troubleshooting bs, that i literally know every bit of data that moves on my network... that this issue is identical on both an iPad and android phones (so totally different apps\OSes)... the "live support" already tried(my req) totally deleting then reissuing the problematic promos... 'deleted' one persisted...etc
I clearly lay out all this info, even suggesting they forward it to someone in tech... give them the specific model numbers and OS builds of the primary devices(ipad and android phone)
...
I get back, an equally long, form response... summary:
we r soooo sorry you're having trouble
we care sooooo much about your\customer experience!
the tech team says (heavily implying it got escalated\forwarded) if you try these things itll fix it:
*imagine every generic troubleshooting guide from the early 2000s, plus a few notes like "(smartphone)"*
...and i shit you not, it even gave instructions to restart devices, power-cycle my modem\router and clear my browser cache. (all clearly nonsensical to anyone who read my initial email with a vague knowledge of English and/or tech)
Despite only having 1 valid hand to type with, i type nearly 70wpm (on my prefd keyboards)... so I lectured them, explaining their disrespectful bs clearly... and including a dumbed down metaphor relating a friendly request for a specific salsa recipe using\not using specific available ingredients... and replied to with a children's description of what a tomato is.
Explicitly gave a second chance to actually read the initial issue\email and forward or respond appropriately.
I was way more polite than my depiction seems...too polite.
soooo... i sent an additional email response...
i changed the subject so it'd still align with their ticket system but also identified the rep, with heavily implied disdain.
the contents of the additional response:
Dear 'Mary',
It seems that I forgot to include a very important resource for you.
I apologise. Please follow this link and complete all steps\levels. I want you to have a great online experience!

things like the "Best Regards," are artifacts of their formatting.
