I've spent like 2 days on this semi-toy project, for which I would have been paid generously had I chosen to work for a client instead. This pleasure cost me hundreds of €s not earned. But it feels ssooooo good to code smth just for pleasure.
Totally worth it!13 -
Thinking about machine learning and models... without data, there is no model, meaning they are extremely dependent on the data.
But is that intelligence? It seems more like the most basic form of a human that consumes anything it’s given—an indoctrinated, brainwashed slave, in a sense.
True intelligence involves overriding the training through reasoning, raw intellect, intuition, or the ability to question.
If a model is trained solely on the laws of physics and language, can it reason afterward? For example, can it use physics to question the events of 9/11, arguing that the laws of physics do not allow for the free fall of three towers, regardless of the CGI planes shown on TV?
We are intelligent, sentient beings on this planet.
While God is a man-made concept, reality provides us with much evidence of our creation. We are the children of nature, and nature is the first intelligence that gave life to us all.
Do whatever it takes to survive and protect your people.5 -
apparently the ability to want to try something new is creativity...
the what. that bar seems too low?4 -
Just saw a variable in C named like this:
long time_ago; //in a galaxy far away
I laughed no stop.20 -
If I had a dollar for every time my mom tried to literally convince me that I wasn't in fact me, but was an impostor planted by aliens… I would have one dollar.
Yes, it did happen. I was twelve.6 -
Okay so I had an acute derealization episode yesterday, hence yesterday’s post. Ignore what I said.
It was caused by the lack of sleep, the first such case since 2018.
Symptoms included super wide FOV — my arms were three miles long, I saw what seemed like almost my whole surroundings all at once. I couldn’t confirm the reality of that superhuman vision with an experiment because it was hard to grasp reality during derealization. I’m almost certain that it was just my brain extending my vision from memory, but I had no idea it could even do that given how detailed it was.
Also, vertigo was crazy.
I don’t own a funded Interactive Brokers account.
I don’t do drugs, alcohol, nicotine or caffeine. I never ever did drugs or alcohol. I’m about one year nicotine free and about three months caffeine free.
I’m bipolar and autistic. My prescription medications include neuroleptics that slow me down, not speed me up — the standard medication scheme prescribed to millions of patients all over the world.1 -
I think I‘ll bite the bullet and write my own version of SwiftRant (Swift REST API for devRant) with modern concurrency and a clean implementation and without semaphores and force unwraps which cause app crashes.9

I'm not joking when I say how dumb I am. Like, for example, yesterday, me and a friend had to figure out how much is 15×6. He did it by doing 10×6 + 5×6, that's 2 "×"s and a single "+", dead simple, right? Yep. Me? I did it 5×3×3×2... Which, ok, is 9×10, but do you think I can do 9×10? Nope, to me 9×10 is the result 🤌🏻 that's how much of a door knob I am8

Me: do you have monitorin enabled for your cluster?
They: no
me: I recommend enabling it
they: naah, we're good
error: *occurs*
they: *try to guess at which hop which limits were or were not hit and/or which nw links could've dropped a packet with trial-and-error approach for days*
me: telemetry would give you an answer in under a minute....
They: ok cool. We're still good1 -
So apparantly VSCode is the new shit in the automation industry. B&R just presented their fork of it and Siemens showed off Simatic AX. One thing you really need to see is, that Siemens apparantly uses the VSCode Pets plugin in their marketing material.5

I remember when I first graduated, I could only find job opportunities where companies wanted Mid to Senior levels. Now, 4 years later, I can only find job opportunies for Senior level devs.
Fuck this market so much, why did I had to like programming.9 -
20 minutes for a 1GB update.
It's getting tiresome and an inconvenience to switch on an Xbox for a quick game.
I have installed entire Operating Systems quicker.than these updates take to complete.
Consoles used to be convenient to fire up and play, that was a lot of the appeal.
And are controllers getting heavier?38 -
Interesting project lined up for today!
I'll be installing a security system, one camera connected to a DVR pointing at a front door triggering a buzzer and sending a video feed to a monitor in a ground floor room at the other side of the house.
But it's my dads house so I'm going to have fun with it and install a wired Cat5 network an Isolated offline router and build in some "smart home" features from scratch, all running on a Local Area Network.
I've built a private home server package for media and storage using Apache and I want to add as many features to the house as I can, maybe even install an extra camera pointing towards the sky (every home should have a sky cam lol).
I can take my time with this project over the next several weeks and I was wondering what would you add to this project?10 -
Manager: You want a promotion? To senior? Ha. Well, build this web app from scratch, quickly, while still doing all your other duties, and maybe someone will notice and maybe they’ll think about giving you a promotion! It’ll give you great visibility within the company.
Your first project is adding SSO using this third party. It should take you a week.
Third party implementation details: extremely verbose, and assumes that you know how it works already and have most of it set up. 👌🏻
Alternative: missing half the details, and vastly different implementation from the above
Alternative: missing 80%; a patch for an unknown version of some other implementation, also vastly different.
FFS.
Okay, I roll my own auth, but need creds and a remote account added with the redirects and such, and ask security. “I’m building a new rails app and need to set up an SSO integration to allow employees to log in. I need <details> from <service>.” etc. easy request; what could go wrong?
Security: what’s a SSO integration do you need to log in maybe you don’t remember your email I can help you with that but what’s an integration what’s a client do you mean a merchant why do merchants need this
Security: oh are you talking about an integration I got confused because you said not SSO earlier let me do that for you I’ve never done it before hang on is this a web app
Security: okay I made the SSO app here you go let me share it hang on <sends …SSL certificate authority?>
Boss: so what’s taking so long? You should be about done now that you’ve had a day and a half to work on this.
Abajdgakshdg.
Fucking room temperature IQ “enterprise security admin.”
Fucking overworked.
Fucking overstressed.
I threw my work laptop across the room and stepped on it on my way out the door.
Fuck this shit.rant root mentally adds punctuation root talks to security root has a new project why is nowhere hiring enterprise sso12 -
some dev asked in group chat if the connection between HOST1 and HOST2 is blocked on the firewall.
They're are sitting in DMZ and intranet ... of course one direction is blocked
I asked for details, he wants to SSH from the one sitting in DMZ to the one in intranet (which is a docker host btw)
oh boiiii1 -
Some caffeine fueled morning passion...
Social media platforms getting away with suspensions and all other manner of 'social punishment' has to be the highest level authoritarianism has ever reached in its entire history. Social Media platforms, have it seems, become a side gig for tyrants and the excuses don't cut it with people anymore.
It's hard to believe that "we the people" allow companies to govern over entire populations of people, much larger than some of the most democratic and free countries on the planet with an iron fist.
The enforcement of community standards for breaking arbitrary rules that wouldn't make it to a solicitors desk is extraordinary in the extreme. If it's not a credible threat or illegal, then it's obvious an intention behind the punishment is conditioning.
And this is what authoritarian regimes have done throughout history.13 -

There’s this person at $work who never uses punctuation of any kind. She has mental issues and insists on neutral pronouns (and strongly advertises these) so I’ll use the indefinite to pretend to be respectful. It has multiple thoughts while typing a message and just keeps typing through all of them without stopping. It pauses not to collect its thoughts, to edit for clarity or to fix mistakes, to separate anything (including disjoint topics), to summarize, etc. (Though calling these “thoughts” is a huge stretch, given its lack of propensity for that particular subject.) It’s as if it has zero distinction between writing and speaking, and simply lets the mental diarrhea flow while their fingers do their best to keep pace. Reading these trainwrecks of thought — and gleaning any useful information from them — is always difficult and a little bit painful.
It is also in charge of IT security, which is more than a bit worrying. (But I hate the company with a passion, so it doesn’t bother me nearly as much as it otherwise would.)43 -
Fave languages and frameworks, go!
As of now for me, loving these:
PHP8 and Laravel with Livewire*, Django5.1, MariaDB. PHP must stand for PrettyHeckinPCoolasFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUU
*after using React and Vue for quite a while, I've concluded that the best front end is back end. And I like Postgres, I just find that MySQL is fine for most things.25
