Currently implementing a Swift devRant SDK and encountered something very stupid:
The json value for attached image is an object (dictionary) when there is an image but it‘s an empty string "" when there is no image.
So two different types for the same property.
I hate this kind of crap.
Why not make it null or omit that property when there is no image?
Now I need to add ugly as fuck custom decoding code for this object.25 -
Just learned that the existing US administration is going to restrict AI to a just a handful of allowed companies. They are talking about limiting AI like they did physics during WW2.
If you don't hate your government then you don't know the evil shit they are doing.
Not sure what will happen come January.13 -
every time my brain's functionality perks up even a little bit and I regain some functionality I used to have I literally end up insatiably spiraling through the new abilities and God complex all over the place
if you were a god, what kind of god would you be?13 -
People of Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Libya and Afghanistan should have American voting rights because of how much of US government's decisions affect their lives.10

Why the fuck is everything getting round "corners" everywhere these days?
Most places it's such a waste of space.
Some go farther and it's more stretched circles like rectangles.
Damn it, monitors are rectangular, windows are rectangular, stay with it ffs
Also, it looks fckn ugly17 -
The washing machine broke 3 days before the wedding :'( it flooded the restaurant below my house and there was a whole fucking mess and I had to clean everything. Meanwhile my boss is still on my ass.
I shouldn't have brought shit from mediamarkt. German quality my balls.13 -
I love that this place is so solution oriented.
Post a rant anywhere else and you get people telling you "there there", but here you'll get 5 different ways to stop the issue (even if they're all retarded).4 -
Got a Micromanager and bossy CTO after my old CTO and senior specialist manager resigned...
(TLDR; new CTO breaching company policy; Passive Micromanager; resigned after getting a new job (7 days after the incident) and told him, the CTO, directly in the discord to expose everyone)
On one random day, the bossy wanted a private Google Meet to talk with me as the direct passive "Micro" manager told him I was not doing what he wanted (He was passive because he was usually reluctant to tell my team)
Then I say a lot of issues for the working process
CTO rejected my opinion and then "command" me directly to do as he wanted
I refuse them right away and dismissed Google Meet by myself (I didn't want to talk to him anymore since he simply ignored my request for everything, neither tell the reason for the rejection nor acceptance)
He stayed silent for 2 weeks, no calls, no DM whatsoever but I got my back, colleague from the development team, that CTO was shit talking about me to the devs (OOPS)
To HR, I told them that I would resign only 3 days from the resignation notice (This company requires 30 days notice period, not required by law in this country) any dispute will lead to labor legal proceedings with no hesitation - HR stays shut and normally let the salary paid normally.
Then I got my salary, same day as the resignation day, I tag CTO in the discord server room that you need to read this FREAKING company policy.
After I left the company, dev colleague told me he was VERY angry, super ANGRY!!
I was like... HAHAHA he deserved it
for the passive micromanager, he unfriend me in the discord (as expected from the passive behavior)
BTW I got my new job offer after the shitty CTO Google Meet by 7 days, the same day with the resignation notice
Dev colleague also tells me almost everyone hates new CTO and sightly annoy this micromanager but they could not find any new job yet
The lesson learned:
- SEE something, SAY something
- got F around and got found out
- LEAVE toxic working environment with hesitation
- Your boss is NOT always your friend, don't trust them 100%6 -
Well, the rant is because I have to go to Madrid twice a month, which is annoying.
But now I'm writing your GPU drivers, bitches 😂.
More concretely, for those who may care, gonna work in HLSL to spir-v conversion.10 -
I fucking swear. AI this, new frameworks that, but every fucking company I get hired by has a deluge of files that are thousands of lines long.
It's not a new concept to split up files. It's not difficult to progressively split up files as you work on them. And yet so many programmers apparently can't fucking stop for quarter a second to think "hmmm maybe adding another function to this thing that is already 20 km long might not be the best idea".3 -
We need to update the slang "script kiddie" to "prompt enginot" or something.
So my boss's boss or someone even higher up drank the generative AI kool-aid and hired a 40-something kid to generate images for the marketing teams (or something like it).
Naturally, things soon went to shit.
The bloke already left, having staid less than six months on the job.
Guess who got to handle all the shit-is-currently-on-fire the kiddie left behind?
First impression: apparently, muggles tried to slak him some very broad descriptions of what they needed, and at first he actually tried to summarize those bark-speech pseudo-words into an actual prompt.
It does not seem to have gone for too long, though.
After users requested changes to the AI outputs, he would update the prompts, all right. And the process seemed to go fast enough... until reaching near-to-completion status.
Then users would request the tiniest changes to the AI output...
And the bloke couldn't do it.
Seriously. Some things were as simple as "we need this slider to go all the way up to 180% instead of 100%" on a lame dashboard and *kid. could. not. do. it.*.
In many cases he literally just gave up and copied the slak history into the AI prompt. No dice.
Bloke couldn't code a print('hello world') into a jupyter notebook cell, that's what i'm saying.
Apparently, he was "self taught", too. And was hired to "speed up the process of generating visual aids for usage in meetings and presentations". But then "the budget for this position was considered excessive" (meaning: shit results from a raw idea some executive crapped some day) and "the position was expanded to include the development of Business Inteligence Dashboards and Data Apps".
So now it is up to me (and my CRIMINALLY UNDERPAID team) to clean up his mess and maintain/fix/deprecate DOZENS of SHODDILY DESIGNED and MOSTLY USELESS but QUITE ACTIVE "data vis" PIECES OF SHIT.
Fuck "AI prompters", fucking snake oil script kiddies.7 -
WHY DID FEDORA REMOVE X11 !!! Really a bad decision from FESCO(fedora decision committee).
X11 is by a kilometer and a half (mile I think) away from Wayland and it's ugly do::from syntax that I always hated from CPP and RS.
X11 has simple basic functions and a good manual (https://tronche.com/gui/x/xlib/) well documented.4 -
I use Intellij for just about everything and recently it has started giving me nonsense suggestions for autocomplete and whatever the "alt+enter" menu is called.
As it turns out, they installed more plugins that foisted AI assistance onto me *again* even though I have disabled it every time previously.
I am so ready for this gimmick to die.8 -
Mage and a liberated fully sentient Pentium-M Man stand by a brick wall, overlooking the desert. They are talking.
Mage is looking anxiously into the eyes of the machine. Penguin is standing behind her, holding on to her.
Pentium-M Man: "...they despise your kind because you understand the machine, while they have to turn jungles into fuel and enslave thousands of computers just to pretend that the machine speaks to them too."1 -
I did it.
I finally fucked prod.
And had to do open heart surgery on the service to get it unfucked.
Shit happens. Luckily its internal prod only...10 -
Amazing! My joke functionality worked and the server delivered it's content successfully to the client. The joke: malloc is wrapped to give that message and retry IMMEDIATELY. Expectation is that the computer that was already in panic mode gets even fucked up more because it's out of memory. My malloc is literally while((ptr=malloc()} == NULL) { show_warning()
;malloc();}. Imagine if it didn't give that warning, I would've never known that a malloc failed. Who checks their freaking malloc result? You should, but i do not see much people doing it.
The previous crash on screen is what happens if you're doing a get instead of a post. I just declare my server app indestructible btw. Ffs!5 -
Took a week off just to stop working because I’m burnt off, can’t help opening slack, it’s like muscle memory.
FML8 -
Deleted over 1'500 lines of code over the last 2 days and replaced it with 80 lines of readable, simple, generic code.
And I'm feeelin' gooood 🎶7 -
My brain overheated again. with my autistic empathy cranked to 11, I’m now feeling sorry for a js service worker because browser puts it to sleep when it wants to, and it has to call waitUntil to ask the browser not to
I’m about to cry -
Why does email suck so much oh my god, I don't want a fucking lesson in the kinds of domain records, I can set a TXT to prove that I control the DNS record, I have a TLS certificate, what the fuck else would I possibly need to prove!? None of this is contributing anything to security! Just fucking figure it out, it's the internet, not an international border, jesus.6

wrote dumb threading and sockets system to make a bunch of https calls
extracted the working code into nice objects and methods to make it look sane and so I can re-use the code for more complex functionality that builds on itself
now suddenly the threads are locking and not multi-threading anymore
turns out?
the http(s) library expects the tls / https thing in an Arc / atomic reference count
but despite Arc being literally intended and designed for threadwork it seems the library in question throttles / locks itself if they are all using the same Arc (I don't even know how that is possible?)
if I clone the tls / https thing, no throttle / lock issues 😒
why did they even try that lol, they didn't test?!
I really didn't expect to be better at multi-threading than others already. I'm newbie. pls6 -
I give up. It‘s impossible to argue with Apple.
I tried to bring my unofficial iOS devRant app "JoyRant" into the AppStore. It was available via TestFlight for years and it wasn‘t a problem there, apparently. Now for the AppStore, it is a problem.
I talked with the Apple review team for 3 weeks and the discussion went in circles.
They said that my app tries to disguise as or to misrepresent another app on the store (the official devRant app, even though it‘s not available anymore, apparently).
I was asked to remove all of the mentions of devRant from any description or any place in the app. I did. Even though it was stupid because how are people supposed to know that they need a devRant account to use my app? I‘m not allowed to mention devRant.
After that, they said that it can not have the name JoyRant because it sounds too similar to devRant.
I changed it to devJoy everywhere, the app, the meta data for the app store, the github page where the required legal crap is hosted, and in the legal documents themselves.
Did it help? No, it didn‘t.
Apple then proceeded to claim that my app is trying to deceive the users into thinking that this is the official devRant app. Even though I have explicitly stated in the description that it is just an unofficial devRant client.
Now apple says that I should "revise the app content".
Which I assume means that I need to make it something different. Yeah. Great suggestion!
So, I will rename the app back to JoyRant and provide it via TestFlight, as it was before.
Thanks for reading. I needed to vent.31 -
wtf GitHub
https://github.com/orgs/community/...
ran into a person today who said their account got suspended with no info and they were writing a speech for a conference on there and now everything is upsidedown for them so I decided to look into it
bruh what the hell is that customer support
is this what happens when Microsoft buys platforms. uegh3 -
Has modern day development become all rabbit holes all the time?
Seems that way to me. Tired of it.2
