"Arch Linux is actually not that difficult".
I ssh'ed into my home server yesterday.
I was greeted by a message from an ext3 disk about needing fsck. Fine, "I haven't been in here for a while, might as well do some maintenance". fsck /dev/sda6, let's go!
This nicely "repaired" the sshd service (i.e. cleared the sectors), I cursed at myself for pressing enter at "repair (y)" right before the connection broke.
So I connected a display and keyboard... ok so let's just pacman -Sy sshd or whatever. We can do this! Just check the wiki, shouldn't be that hard!
Wait... pacman has not run since 2010? WAIT IT'S ACTUAL UPTIME IS 9 YEARS??? I guess we know why I'm a DB admin and not devops...
Hmm all the mirrors give timeouts? Oh. The i686 processor architecture isn't even supported anymore...?
4 hours, 11 glasses of cognac, 73 Arch32 wiki/forum pages, 2 attempts at compiling glibc, and 4 kernel panics later: "I think I'll buy a new server".16 -
This guy at an internship who only wanted to use anything Microsoft.
It was fine for his own use but he also wanted it for a high security prod environment and tried to push that through.
Luckily, the (very competent) team lead refused to use closed source stuff for high security environments.
"listen (team lead to that guy), it's not going to happen. We're simply not using software from a US based company which is closed source for high security stuff.
Why? The US is one of the biggest surveillance powers in this world, we just can't be sure what's in the software if it's US based. Now you can say that that's paranoid but whether or not it is, the surveillance part is a fact, deal with it. That you want to use it, fine, but NOT. IN. HIGH. SECURITY. PROD. (or prod at all really).
He continued to try and convert colleagues to windows and other Microsoft stuff for the rest of his internship.28 -

day 9 - nerf weapons banned on the office
yesterday - wait colleague leave the office and shoot him on the face every time

Dual 27" Dell 4K HDR monitors, plus a Samsung 1080p and the retina display. My poor 2015 MacBook Pro with a Radeon R9 M370X 2GB can barely handle it. But there's just so much resolution that it's totally worth it!9

*client calls in*
Me: good morning, how can I help you?
Client: my ip is blocked, could you unblock it for me?
Me: certainly! What's your ip address? Then I'll have a look.
Client: I'm not giving you my ip?! That's too privacy sensitive.
Me: 😶
Me: 😶
Me: 😶
Me: sir, I'm very keen on my privacy myself but without that information I can't do much for you 😬
Client: ah so you're refusing to help me?
Me: not like that, it's just very hard to lift an ip block for me when I don't know the ip address.
Client: you just don't want to help, fine.

EU Parliament voted against the new Copyright directive.

TensorFlow/ML or JS....
DFox will probably not like this but for comments I want like a live-updated feed rather than a single notification that says "One or more people commented.."
1. There's no context what post it's from
2. It won't auto-scroll down to the last read
Or I could just be making a problem out of nothing...1 -
Yesterday, I wrote that Paypal password reset is kinda broken.
Well, today I found out that they have limitation to 20 chars in password and, if you paste longer one, input field will accept only 20 and rest is gone. And all that happens without warning. I mean, you can see only 20 dots, but who is counting password dots?2 -
The irony when you move your presentation on data safety onto a drive that is likely to fail soon.1
