@c3r38r170 you are quite right. People are concerned about privacy in Discord and, generally, any chat platform with window to providers and agencies, unlike Jitsi.
By the way, telling last 2 digits of user tag in Discord is really nothing if you, for example, have got completely another username at this platform from one on devRant, so yeah... -

@linuxxx It's personal opinion, your not trusting Discord is your opinion, As long as it's on internet, there will always be suspicion. If you really want to be completely safe, you will need to build seperate internet for yourself.

@theabbie I don't agree. Technically it's my opinion but I think it's also quite factual as they straight out sell your data which means losing control over how it's used and we've seen plenty of examples as for how bad this can go.
There are enough privacy friendly alternatives, they often just require self hosting and with 50-60 hour work weeks I have about zero energy left. -

@linuxxx It's not factual in case of Discord though, or maybe. And self-hosting can't be considered an "Alternative" You can't host a seperate Discord and expect everyone to use that. Your Data goes through a lot more places, privacy is not even a thing once your data leaves your computer.

And not being able to expect everyone bring able to host their own alternative does not not make this an alternative.
Privacy definitely can be a thing when the data leaves the computer, if it couldn't be:
- Anyone could login to any account
- Encryption would suddenly magically become completely useless
- all servers on the Internet would be accessible to anyone
- aaaaaand so on.
If a strongly end to end encrypted message leaves my phone, I definitely lose control (privacy) over the encrypted message itself. But since no one can access the plaintext data.... I keep control over the plaintext data regardless, thus retaining privacy on another level. -

Okay, you were right about Discord, maybe, I will learn this lesson on privacy later in life. for now, I would pass. -

There is event on the nose, it will involve fallback activities if certain tech issues appear, but I'll look forward to get rid of such troubles. -

I have a Discord account (technically) but I never use it.. the app and the idea of "servers" that aren't really servers feels.. not very tailored to my taste. And there's already a Telegram chat for devRant as well (https://t.me/codrTalk) as well, so yeah...
Interesting to see the collabs be used again though! And good luck :) -
@Condor thanks. Well, I dislike Telegram for requiring mobile number and absence of "server" abstraction that helps us with structuring user content.

OK, now that Discord is going to be carelessly removing discriminators from their system, I wanted to let you know that exposed numbers don't give attackers anything... unlike your new nicknames. Nobody liked how Discord handled this and created more vulnerabilities along the way.
If you have an advanced threat model, I suggest you to use a username different from one on devRant and do not pass the verification - it's not a private knowledge whether you're there or not. Otherwise, you can verify yourself to favor clearly stating your association. -
